Whenever I change the paper in my printer, it asks me what size/type the paper is. Where can I set the printer to display an error or warning before printing if the print job received has a different paper size than what I specified was in the printer?

This appears to be the opposite of what most people ask (how to correct a paper mismatch error or similar).
In general, if you have changed the paper in the printer, especially if that paper was changed for a different paper size / type, many software and programs will provide the error you seek. The type of error might be called something like "paper mismatch" or "incorrect paper size detected" or "paper size in printer does not match the paper size indicated in the job".
The solution is to alert the printer to change / retain the paper when you either change that paper or open the printer tray.
What does that mean?
The printer is not concerned whether you tell it what is going on.
I know of no way to "pre" force an error that does not yet exist.
Correcting / accepting the paper size / type on the printer display is best practice.
The software and programs you use to print is where you will see any errors resulting from paper size / type issues.

- Access to the complete Printer Preferences requires having installed the Full Driver printer software.
- Printing Preferences are available directly from the driver.

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers
Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences
- When called from within printing software / applications, Printing Preferences might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" / “More Settings” / “Properties” or similar.
- No Size? If the size of the Paper Size is not included in the Drop-down list, consider / try: Create a Custom Paper Size Form. Reference: HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes
NOTE >> Preferences and Envelopes:
Select / leave Printing Preferences Shortcut to "Everyday Printing" or something equally benign.

Thanks for replying. My problem is that sometimes we change paper size in the tray, and when someone else prints later, the printout comes out on the wrong-sized paper, as if there is some kind of auto-continue on error setting that is incorrect. Looking for that setting in my 8710...

I am talking about settings in the printer itself which would compare the info in the printjob it receives pertaining to paper size and refuse to print if that paper size is different from what I told the printer in its printer setting on the printer the paper size is.
Other HP printers I worked with in the past would have a setting for this, and the info in the printjob received by the printer was also used to determine which tray to pull paper from when the printer had multiple trays. So my question is not related to which PC or source of the printjob is, just that when the printer receives a job to print, what settings affect what the printer does? Does it print on whatever paper is in the tray, or does it block and display a Papersize mismatch error (Which is what I want it to do). My 8710 just prints regardless of the match or not.
