I need to buy an HP printer that does not require me to sign on to HP+ account to buy inks or any other account. I just want to print/scan and photocopy. I don't do a lot of printing, so I prefer to buy my own inks. What do you recommend?

Hi @Trudy-28

Thanks for the update — and great choice with the DeskJet 2810e!

Yes, you can use the ink that came with the printer even if you don’t activate HP+. Just be sure to skip the HP+ activation during setup. The printer will still work perfectly with the included cartridges, and you’ll be able to buy and use standard HP ink in the future — no subscription needed.

Hi @Trudy-28,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding purchasing a printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If you're looking for an HP printer that doesn't require you to sign up for an HP+ account and allows you to buy your own inks, you might consider the HP ENVY or HP DeskJet series. These printers offer basic functionalities like printing, scanning, and photocopying without the need to subscribe to HP+'s advanced features.

Recommended Models:

HP DeskJet 3755

  • Functions: Print, scan, copy
  • Key Features: Compact size, affordable ink cartridges, wireless printing
  • Suitable For: Occasional home printing needs

HP ENVY 6055e

  • Functions: Print, scan, copy
  • Key Features: Sleek design, easy mobile printing, borderless photos
  • Suitable For: Families or individuals with moderate printing needs

Both models are ideal for users who prefer to control their ink purchasing without being tied to subscription services. They provide flexibility, allowing you to buy and replace ink cartridges as needed based on your printing frequency.

Where to Buy: You can purchase these printers directly from HP's website or from authorized retailers.

I hope this helps.

Hi. Thank you for the information. I had a look at some printers the other day and noticed the ENVY ones. It was when I reviewed them that I noticed that the reduced price was because you had to buy the ink on subscription. That is why I sent in my original query. It has now made me very wary of buying one. One I looked at was the HPK HP 6120E ENVY £59.99

Thanks for your follow-up!

You're absolutely right to be cautious—it's important to know exactly what you're getting. While some HP+ printers like the ENVY 6120e can be activated with HP+, the ink subscription is completely optional. You can skip HP+ during setup and still use the printer normally with standard HP cartridges you purchase as needed.

If you want to avoid any prompts altogether, you can also consider non-HP+ models like the regular HP DeskJet 2720 or 3755, which don’t include HP+ features by default.

Hope this clears things up! 😊 Let us know if you need help picking a model that’s a perfect fit.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you for your advice. I have taken the plunge and bought a printer. It has come with ink, but can I still use it if I don't choose subscription? The printer was deskjet2810e. Can you advise if this is one of the ones I can use without subscription?

HP Recommended

@Trudy-28, Thanks for the update — and congrats on your new printer! 😊

The DeskJet 2810e can work without an HP+ subscription, but here's the key part:
If you activate HP+ during setup, the printer becomes tied to that system permanently and requires an internet connection and only original HP ink.

If you skip HP+ activation during setup, you'll be able to use the printer normally, buy your own cartridges as needed, and won’t be tied to any subscription.

Since you’ve already set it up, check if you activated HP+ (you might see a welcome screen or email about it). If you didn’t opt in — you’re good to go!

Let us know if you need help checking or changing anything. Enjoy your printing! 🖨

Take care, and have an amazing day!
