macOS 12.0 Monterey

This is the SAME issue from February 2023 thread, I am still having this issue:

I'm trying to install drivers for a Laser Jet Pro MFP M148fdw.

I'm running Mac OS Ventura 13.2.1 (there's no way to select that OS version on this forum's drop down).

The install goes fine, then we get to "Enable Wi-Fi Direct". Whether I select it or not (tried both), we come to the next screen:
"HP Product Improvement Study is a research program that allows HP to improve product to better meet customer needs.

I primarily use HP Products and services:

In the home

In a Business"

There's buttons to select each and drop down menus for how may employees etc. It doesn't matter what I select, a small box appears below which can only take one letter, not a number. Whatever letter is typed in there turns red and I cannot advance beyond this screen.

Anybody have a fix?

Hi @Believen89,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Download Latest Drivers and Software:

  • Visit the HP Support website and ensure you download the latest drivers and software specific to your printer model and compatible with macOS Ventura.

Disable Pop-Ups and Notifications:

  • Disable any pop-up blockers and ensure that notifications are enabled during the installation process to avoid interruptions.

Use HP Easy Start:

  • Download and use the HP Easy Start software which simplifies the installation process for HP printers. You can find it on the HP support page for your printer model.

Manual Driver Installation:

  • If the automated setup keeps getting stuck due to the Product Improvement Study prompt, manually install the drivers:
    • Open "System Preferences" on your Mac.
    • Go to "Printers & Scanners".
    • Click the "+" button to add a printer.
    • Select your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw from the list and choose the manually downloaded driver during the setup.

Remove Existing Incomplete Installations:

  • Delete any partially installed printer profiles.
    • Go to "System Preferences" > "Printers & Scanners".
    • Select the HP LaserJet printer profile and click "-" to remove it.
    • Restart your Mac before attempting to reinstall.

Alternative Installation Method:

  • Use Bonjour or AirPrint:
    • Some HP printers can be set up using Bonjour or AirPrint, which can simplify the setup process without relying on HP’s installation software.

Update macOS:

  • Ensure macOS Ventura is fully updated.
    • Go to "System Preferences" > "Software Update" and install all available updates.

Temporary Workaround:

  • If none of the above solutions work, try temporarily disabling Wi-Fi direct and other HP specific functionalities during setup, completing the installation, and then re-enabling the functionalities desired after installation.

I hope this helps.
