Our printer suddenly went offline a few days ago while using Google Docs, I couldn't get it back online so I decided to uninstall it and reinstall, but now I can't get it to reinstall .  My computer just prompts me to add a printer but when i type in my printer name nothing happens or it says device not found

Hi @Bwatts1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It can be frustrating when a printer goes offline, and reinstalling it doesn't seem to resolve the issue. Let's try to troubleshoot and resolve the problem step by step.

Troubleshooting Steps.

  1. Check Physical Connections:

    • Ensure that your printer is powered on and properly connected to your computer via USB or through the network.
    • If it's a wireless printer, make sure it's connected to the Wi-Fi network.
  2. Printer Status:

    • Check the printer for any error messages or lights that indicate an issue.
    • Make sure there's enough paper in the tray and that there are no paper jams.
  3. Restart Devices:

    • Restart both your computer and the printer. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve communication issues.
  4. Verify Printer Status:

    • Open the Control Panel on your computer and navigate to "Devices and Printers."
    • Look for your printer. If it shows as offline, right-click on it and select "Use Printer Online."
  5. Check Printer Queue:

    • Go to the "Devices and Printers" window, right-click on your printer, and select "See what's printing."
    • Clear any pending print jobs.
  6. Reinstall Printer Driver:

    • Download the latest printer driver from the HP website. Make sure to download the driver that corresponds to your printer model and your computer's operating system.
    • Install the driver and follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. Windows Troubleshooter:

    • Run the built-in troubleshooter for printers on your Windows computer. Go to "Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters," then select "Printer" and run the troubleshooter.
  8. Check Antivirus/Firewall:

    • Sometimes, security software can block communication with the printer. Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall and try installing the printer again.
  9. Reset Printer:

    • Consult your printer's manual to find instructions on how to perform a reset on your printer. This can often clear up communication issues.
  10. Use Different USB Port or Cable:

    • If you are using a USB connection, try a different USB port on your computer or use a different USB cable.
  11. Check Network Connection:

    • For networked printers, ensure that both the printer and the computer are connected to the same network.
  12. Check for Windows Updates:

    • Ensure your operating system is up-to-date. Sometimes, Windows updates can include fixes for printer-related issues.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with your HP printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
