I don't need your HP Smart App! I have been just printing via USB cable. What has happened?!

HP Smart app is an option, users can download drivers from hp.com and install their devices without HP SMart.

Hi Valsimot,

I wish it would be so! My printer is HP LaserJet MFP M140WE, I bought it in June this year. It has been connected via USB cable and I've been printing on it using stadard Windows driver without any problems. I've never registered it in HP Smart or any other nonsense. Today the only thing it's printing is that and it refuses to print anything else:
photo_2024-12-14_18-17-35.jpg
It just starts pritning, when I send a document to it, and immediately stops. I've tried already to setup this idiotic HP Smart app on both my phone and PC connected to the same WiFi network as the printer. Both apps see the printer and both give me an error with a recommendation to contact the HP support...

How can you explain that? Where is my option to not use HP Smart app???

Cheers,
Vitalii

Apologies for jumping in unannounced.

Important

I cannot fix the problem --

I hope to explain what might be the reason for your situation.

The information is presented FYI only.

TLDR?

Yeah, I get it.

It's a lot of stuff you don't want to read

AND

Ultimately, none of it will change anything for you.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Start...

This printer is a product match to the information in you image:

HP LaserJet MFP M140we Printer

The search for your printer was used based on information you provided (in your image) minus the serial number (which should not be posted publicly).

You can find and open the exact home page for your printer

Open Product Home - Printers

Use the serial number as the model name, and if asked, add the Product Number in the second box: 7MD72E

=========================================

What happened?

Assuming for the sake of the answer that you did indeed purchase the "we" model (with the "we" at the end of the model name), then the printer you purchased is a hard-coded HP+ printer.

Unlike printers that are eligible for HP+ but have a choice whether the HP+ service is accepted, the "we" model of this printer was only sold as an HP+ enabled printer.   NOTE >> The merchant from whom you purchased the printer did not enable the printer for HP+, the printer was built to be used as an HP+ service model.

Requirements for HP+ printers

This topic describes the requirements for HP+ printers.

Keep the printer connected to the Internet

HP+ printers are cloud-connected devices that must remain connected to the Internet in order to function. The
Internet connection enables the printer to deliver HP+ specific app features and firmware updates.

During setup, you must connect the printer to the Internet using a supported network connection. After setup, you can print using a USB cable connection, if desired, but the printer must still be connected to the Internet.

Use Original HP cartridges

Original HP cartridges are cartridges manufactured and sold by HP in official HP packaging. If non-Original HP
supplies or refilled cartridges are installed, HP+ printers will not operate as expected.

--------------------------------------------------------------

What to do?

There is no "backing out" of the HP+ service nor is there a way to change the printer's requirements.

The printer was never intended to be other than what it  is.

You must decide whether to keep the printer and acquiesce to the printer's setup requirements and operation.

=========================================

Warranty Information - FYI

The following is relevant if you decide to keep the printer.

The exact page shows the warranty as expired -- I am guessing you purchased the printer from an online merchant (not HP) that is still selling old stock.

What?

HP discontinued sales of the "we" model before HP discontinued sales of the "w" models of the same printer (M140).

and

The product was introduced in your region in January 2022 -- regardless of all else, HP does not sell outdated hardware

The hardware Warranty can be instated if you submit a Warranty Dispute form to update the Warranty information.

Warranty Dispute

The original warranty date is set at manufacturing and perhaps by the merchant who sells the device to the consumer.

If the warranty details of your product are incorrect, submit a dispute through the HP warranty validation website.

NOTE: Trouble opening Dispute form? Try using the Microsoft Edge Browser

Hi Dragon-Fur,

Thank you very much. This clarifies it quite a bit. I bought it from John Lewis & Partners and there was no such clear explanation of the limitations unfortunately, and I've never heard about printers like that before. I will try to make it functional at least, otherwise it's still under a 2 year warranty.

Thanks,
Vitalii

@vitaliistep

You are welcome.

"Seemed like a good idea" at the time...

HP only sold the hard-coded "we" models for a brief time and then suspended sales of the model type.

True - Not-HP Store sellers were either unaware or did not care for the details.

Not-HP sellers also tend to sell their merchandise until the inventory is depleted.

There are still a few of these printers "out there" on websites, I think.

Dragon Opinion

The whole HP+ deal is not so bad --

I voluntarily enabled the service on an HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e that I purchased in early 2024.

I didn't care about the warranty -- I've never had a printer hardware failure -- but I did want access to the other HP+ perks for training purposes here in the Community.

Sampling...

Print Anywhere is the "new" ePrint

True - Although Print Anywhere shares a few of the same "under the hood" protocols with the old ePrint, Print Anywhere is a different animal.  The main difference (as you might have guessed), is that Print Anywhere is tied to the HP Smart application.
