HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

It gives me an error message when trying to add the printing device.  Blk INK looks great.   Some of color inks are low.  Otherwise it was just working a week ago.  Will it not add if the color ink is low.  Seems like I should be able to still print out in blk and wht.   Why will it not add.   Both devices are on the same wireless network.

HI @KLancaster,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're having trouble adding your printer and getting an error message, here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue:

Check Ink Levels: Even if the black ink is fine, some printers require all cartridges to have sufficient ink to function properly. If any color cartridge is too low, it might prevent printing or adding the printer.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for a few minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

Restart Your Devices:

  • Restart both your computer and the printer to refresh connections.

Update Printer Software:

  • Ensure you have the latest printer drivers installed. Visit the HP website to download any updates.

Use HP Smart App:

  • If you're not using it already, try adding the printer through the HP Smart app instead of the standard printer settings.

Check Network Connection:

  • Confirm that both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. You can print a network configuration page from the printer's menu to check this.

Remove and Re-add the Printer:

  • Go to your computer's printer settings, remove the printer if it's listed, and then try adding it again.

Check for Error Messages on the Printer:

  • Look at the printer's display for any error messages or prompts that might indicate what’s wrong.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
