My doc feeder is not working on my new HP when I try to scan. Is there a setting I need to change?

Hi @RalphEppie,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the document feeder on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e All-in-One Printer is not working when you attempt to scan, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and check the settings.

Ensure Proper Document Placement

  • Place the document correctly in the automatic document feeder (ADF). Align the pages as indicated by the guides on the feeder.
  • Make sure the feeder rollers can grip the paper properly. Avoid overloading the feeder.

Check Scan Settings

  • Open the HP Smart App or the scanning software on your computer.
  • Ensure the input source is set to "Document Feeder" instead of "Flatbed Scanner."
    • In the HP Smart App, click Scan, then check the Source dropdown menu.

Inspect the ADF

  • Clean the rollers: Dust and debris can prevent the rollers from picking up the paper.
  • Check for obstructions: Ensure there is no jammed paper or foreign objects inside the feeder.

Perform a Printer Reset

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 1 minute.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on to reset any potential errors.

Update Printer Firmware and Software

  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware. Use the HP Smart App or go to the HP Support website to check for updates.
  • Update the HP Smart App or HP software on your computer.

Run the ADF Scanner Test

  • Access the Printer’s Control Panel or the HP Utility on your computer.
  • Navigate to Tools > Run Maintenance Tasks > Scanner Test to diagnose ADF issues.

Test with a Different Document

  • Use a different document to check if the issue is specific to the paper type or thickness.

Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults (if needed)

  • As a last resort, perform a factory reset:
    • Go to the Settings menu on the printer.
    • Select Printer Maintenance, then choose Restore Factory Settings.
  • Reconfigure the printer after the reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
