HP DeskJet 4158e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Can't print the Excel page (usually can do previously), get mad and trying to reset by un-install the printer device then trying to re-install. Now the HP Smart said the device off line. with USB connected and don't recognize my printer, even W.11 does. I screw up now after deleted, un-install and re-install but nothing works. Beginning, I always connected printer to computer by USB, now want to connect by wifi but it doesn't appear on my network by using WPS. Please help!!!!!

Hi @thvpostman,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I'll be glad to help.

I understand how frustrating this can be, especially when the printer was previously working over USB and now appears offline in HP APP after reinstalling it. Let's first restore communication with the printer and then reconnect it to your network.

Step 1: Remove the Existing Printer Entries

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and computer.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Remove any entries for the HP DeskJet 4158e / HP DeskJet 4100 series.
  4. Restart your computer.

Step 2: Put the Printer Back Into Setup Mode

  1. Make sure the printer is powered on.
  2. Press and hold the Wireless button and the Cancel (X) button together for about 3-5 seconds.
  3. Release the buttons when the wireless light begins blinking.

This places the printer into wireless setup mode so it can be discovered by HP Smart.

Step 3: Reconnect Using HP APP

  1. Ensure your computer is connected to your home Wi‑Fi network.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth on the computer if available.
  3. Open HP APP. HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site
  4. If the old printer is still listed as Offline, remove or hide that entry.
  5. Click Add Printer and wait for HP APP to search.
  6. Select the printer if it appears and follow the prompts to complete the Wi‑Fi setup.

If the Printer Does Not Appear

Please let us know:

  • Is the wireless light blinking or solid?
  • Does HP APP show the printer during setup?
  • Are you using a 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network, a 5 GHz network, or a combined (dual-band) network?
  • Does the printer print a configuration or information page successfully?

After the Printer Is Reinstalled

Once the printer is connected, open Excel and verify that the HP DeskJet 4158e is selected as the active printer under File > Print. Also check that Windows has not changed the default printer to another device such as Microsoft Print to PDF.

Please try the steps above and let us know the results. We'll be happy to continue troubleshooting if needed.
