Cannot update Mac 11.7.10. JUst purchased HP DeskJet 2855e which is only compatible with Mac 12 and newer. Wondering if there is a way I can upgrade the Mac. It doesn't work through Software Update. Say's It is already updated.
Any help is appreciated!

Hi @psnarberg,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it must be to purchase a new printer and then face compatibility issues with your Mac. Let’s go over your options to get the HP DeskJet 2855e working with macOS Big Sur (11.7.10).
Confirm Printer Compatibility:
- According to HP's support website, macOS 11 Big Sur is listed as a supported OS, so the printer should work with your Mac.
Manually Download & Install HP Drivers:
- Go to HP’s official website and search for HP DeskJet 2855e drivers for macOS Big Sur (11.7.10).
- If a driver isn’t available, try installing HP Easy Start (HP’s setup utility) from the HP website and follow the setup instructions.
Use Apple AirPrint (No Drivers Needed):
- AirPrint allows basic printing without installing drivers.
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Add Printer and select your printer.
- If available, choose "Use: AirPrint" instead of an HP driver.
Check for Updates in HP Smart App:
- Download HP Smart from the Mac App Store and try setting up the printer through the app.
- This may automatically detect the correct drivers for your macOS version.
Upgrading macOS (If Needed):
- If you want to update beyond macOS 11 but Software Update says you’re up to date, your Mac may not support newer versions.
- Check if your Mac model is eligible for macOS 12 Monterey or later by visiting Apple’s support page: Check macOS Compatibility
If your Mac doesn’t support newer macOS versions, AirPrint or manually installing drivers should still allow basic printing. Let me know how it goes! 😊
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
