HP OfficeJet 6950 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I need to update the firmware on my OfficeJet 6950 (currently version MJM1CN1624AR from 2016). Trying to update from the printer, it says it's running the latest firmware. I've downloaded directly from HP (version 001.2336A from Nov '23) and when I run it and scan for my printer, it finds the printer fine but shows the update as "not applicable".

The printer is meant to auto update firmware, but I guess it hasn't been, and now needs to be updated to remain compatible with instant ink... any ideas? (possibly the firmware is so out of date I need some interim updates?)

Hi @wheeljackUK,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing some difficulty updating the firmware on your OfficeJet 6950 printer. Here are some steps you can take to try to resolve the issue.

  • Check Compatibility: Ensure that the firmware version you downloaded is indeed compatible with your HP Officejet 6950 printer model. Sometimes, firmware updates are specific to certain printer models or regions.
  • Manual Update: If the automatic update feature isn't working, you can try manually updating the firmware using the firmware file you downloaded from HP's website. Make sure you're following the instructions provided by HP for manual firmware updates.
  • Interim Updates: Your printer's firmware may be so outdated that it requires interim updates before it can be updated to the latest version. You might need to search for and install previous firmware versions before attempting to install the latest one. HP's support website should have archives of previous firmware versions that you can download.
  • Reset Printer: Sometimes resetting the printer to its factory settings can resolve firmware update issues. However, keep in mind that this will erase any custom settings you've configured on the printer, so make sure to back up any important information before proceeding with a reset.

By following these steps and possibly reaching out to HP support for assistance, you should be able to successfully update the firmware on your OfficeJet 6950 printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks @Alden4,

I had a feeling I would need to try a factory reset;

I've double-checked compatibility (and gone via my registered device) and already tried the manual update.

I thought I may be running firmware that's too far out of date, but I searched as much as possible for previous firmware versions on the official HP site, and only one is showing up, is there another way to find older versions (this is the download page) before I try a factory reset? (the printer is enrolled for instant-ink, so I've been avoiding factory reset so I don't need to re-enrol it).

Thanks.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem.
I don't think a factory reset will help. The VerifyID (MJM1CN1624AR) for the new firmware is missing in the update file.

How should I proceed now - please help.

Thank you,
Christian

Hi,

I spent a long time on with HP support running through the methods I'd used to try and update the firmware.

TL;DR because the printer and HP Smart say there's no updated firmware available, 1st line support are adamant that the firmware is up to date so I have asked them to escalate this, they agreed to escalate but I've not heard anything yet (this was only Friday last week, but I'm not very optimistic).

Slightly more detail; I ran through all the firmware update processes again (direct from printer, from HP Smart / Embedded Web Server / from downloaded updater).

As the first two of these result in a message of "no updated firmware available" support told me there was no updated firmware available 🤦

I provided the link to the HP support page that very obviously states that there is a firmware update available (in fact a critical firmware update) but couldn't get any answer when I asked "so is this page wrong if you're saying the firmware from 2016 is up to date?"

I also provided the Instant Ink email telling me my printer is running outdated firmware and needs updated.

I was still told by support that my printer's firmware was up to date.

We agreed to disagree and I asked for this to be escalated 🤷🏼

Hello everyone,

I have just received a call from HP support saying that there is no solution and that there will be no firmware update in the future and that I should therefore dispose of the printer. The printer cartridges do not need to be returned to HP. Seriously?
Crazy world - and really sad HP world!

Bye bye
Christian
