HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw Printer

I’ve been using this printer a lot, but it’s been less than a year since I bought it. Today, ink was smudged all over the paper, and after researching, most of them says it might be due to low ink. However, the ink levels still show as full, so it seems the printer might not allow ink changes until the ink level is very low. When I cleaned the drum, it was limited in cleaning; even after cleaning, the prints are still very dirty.

I had same problem before the previous printer, this is second time.  I’m starting to wonder if this printer is always problem same thing  and if it’s designed to encourage buying a new one within a year rather than maintaining or refilling the ink.

Do you know anyone who can fix or maintain a printer with dirty prints where ink is smudged all over the paper?  Also customer center doesn't help because they don't recognize my serial number and didn't move forward. So sad for the service...

Hi @TRO12,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to experience these recurring issues, especially with a relatively new printer. Here's some detailed advice on dealing with the smudging and dirty prints on your HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw:

1. Common Causes of Smudging and Dirty Prints:

  • Dirty Drum Unit: This can happen when toner or paper dust accumulates on the drum, leading to smudging on the paper.
  • Fuser Issue: The fuser is responsible for melting the toner onto the paper. If it is dirty or malfunctioning, the toner may not adhere properly, causing smudging.
  • Toner Leakage: If the toner cartridge has a leak, it can spread excess toner inside the printer and onto the paper.

2. Steps for Cleaning and Troubleshooting:

Cleaning the Drum Unit:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Remove the toner cartridge and carefully inspect the drum unit.
  • Wipe the drum carefully with a soft, lint-free cloth. You may use isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher) on the cloth, but make sure it’s only slightly damp.
  • Check for toner buildup on the drum and remove any excess carefully. Avoid scratching the drum as it's sensitive to damage.

Cleaning the Fuser:

  • Access the fuser: In some models, this is not user-replaceable, but check your user manual to see if you can remove or clean the fuser.
  • Clean the fuser with a soft cloth. If toner buildup is visible, gently wipe it away. Avoid using any cleaning solution unless recommended by HP.

Inspect the Toner Cartridge:

  • Ensure the toner cartridge is installed correctly. Sometimes improper installation can lead to toner leakage.
  • Check for toner leakage: If you notice toner leaking from the cartridge, it may need to be replaced.

3. Run Diagnostic and Cleaning Tools:

  • Use the printer's built-in cleaning function. Check the printer’s settings (either via the onboard control panel or through the software on your computer) for an option to run a cleaning cycle. This function attempts to clear toner buildup inside the printer.
  • Print a cleaning page: Most HP LaserJet printers offer a feature to print a cleaning page that helps remove excess toner.

4. Maintenance Kit and Fuser Replacement:

If the issue persists, it might be time to replace the fuser or maintenance kit. Depending on how much you’ve used the printer, fusers can wear out and cause smudging issues. HP recommends replacing the maintenance kit after printing a certain number of pages.

I can't remove the toner because this model is just refill one. Cleaning drum is really limited space to clean. That is why I was asking about the question. This one is not easy to clean and if it takes forever cleaning, it is not worth it. I already tried use soft cloth to clean drum so many times but it keeps mess ink on the drum so what can I do? I already spend so much time to clean drum which I can't take it and clean very limited. I don't really understand how HP people think regular buyer can do something special to clean this?

I want to perform below, but I can't find where to do it. Could you please tell me where exactly I can find the built-in cleaning or maintenance? I checked the software but couldn't find a cleaning or maintenance section. I also don't see any printer settings labeled "cleaning." Please let me know specifically where I can find this for the HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw model. Thank you.
