There is no response to any buttons on the touch pad- only a blinking alert light. Tried uninstall and reinstall but

Is this a printer problem or a laptop touchpad problem.

This is a color Laser Jet ProMFP M182nw. Product number 7KW55A. 

The error symbol is flashing but I can't access anything to find out what the error is. This started during a software update.

The only solution I found was uninstalling and then re-installing the printer

This doesn't work. My computer can't find the printer. Used HP Smart with IP address, still can't find the printer. Will not locate using USB either. Doesn't recognize that printer is even powered on.

You mentioned software update but I think you mean the printers firmware update that can be downloaded here 

Connect the printer using a USB cable

Run the firmware app and do the Send Firmware

 

If the printer does not show up in the drop down list, it will need to be serviced.

Select "Contact us". You can change country and language if necessary.

Or contact the closest authorized service center
