Officejet Pro 8500a

I attempted to connect the Officejet Pro 8500a wirelessly to my new PC, but was unsuccessful. I have temporarily connected it via USB, but would prefer to use wireless. Using the printer's control panel I connected it to my wireless network but every attempt to add it as a printer failed.

Can anyone help?

Hi @Tom_in_Florida,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Please find the next set of steps below.

Step 5: Ensure the Printer and PC are on the Same Network

    • You may need to add an exception for the printer software.

Step 8: Restart Devices

  1. Restart Printer and PC:
    • Turn off your printer and PC.
    • Restart your Wi-Fi router.
    • Turn on your printer and PC after the router has restarted.

Step 9: Verify Printer Connection

  1. Print Network Configuration Page Again:
    • Ensure the IP address and network status are correct.
  2. Ping the Printer:
    • Open Command Prompt on your PC and type ping [IP address of your printer].
    • Check if you receive replies from the printer.

Step 10: Re-add Printer if Necessary

  1. Remove and Re-add Printer:
    • In Devices and Printers, right-click on your printer and select Remove device.
    • Add the printer again using the steps above.

I'm replying to your posts: I've been kind of busy with other issues, but I am planning on following your recommendations. I will reply further as I complete the steps you outlined. I hope that you will respond as I report my success/failure.

I tried the initial steps to connect the printer to my wireless network. It appeared to be successful but I don't think it really worked because the IP address in the Network configuration page is 169.254.111.148 and on the Wireless summary on the printer control panel the Hostname is blank. I tried turning off my Norton firewall but that didn't help.

One last thing: Even though I don't think Step 3 to Install the printer on my PC would work due to the suspicious IP address and no Hostname, I  opened the Settings  app, but there was no "Devices" choice. There was "Bluetooth and Devices" so I clicked on that. There was no "Add a printer" but there was "Add a Device", but it didn't mention printers. Pressing on there was an entry called "Printers and scanners" so I clicked on that. I finally saw "Add a printer or scanner". But when I clicked on that it tried to find a new printer but failed. Then there was a selection "Add a printer manually". One of the choices was "Add a printer using an IP address or Hostname". I tried entering the suspect IP address above, but that was not found. At some point I saw a message that the IP address was an AutoIP address, but there was no explanation of what that meant.

What do you recommend?

The auto IP address is one that a device self assigns if it is not able to connect to a DHCP server which would normally provide an address. If you are connecting via wired ethernet I suggest you manually assign an address to the printer. On your computer press windows key and R at the same time. In the window that opens type ipconfig. This will display the ip address of your computer, for example 192.168.1.10. Manually enter the network settings for the printer using an IP address where the first three sets of numbers is the same as your computer, for our example 192.168.1 and set the last number to something like 200. All of this assuming that the activity lights on the network port of the printer are active. If there are not flashing lights on where the network cable plugs in you may have a bad cable.

I am NOT connecting via a wired connection. I am trying to connect via wireless. After the printer finds the wireless network I enter the passphrase and click ok. It completes, but when I print the network report, it continues to say that the printer's IP address is 169.254.111.148. The router says that the IP address for the printer is 192.168.1.73. I'm pretty sure that I entered this same info in an earlier post but this forum isn't letting me scroll up to se my previous posts.

There are some other parameter in the printer configuration screens, such as

Link speed which is set to Automatic

IP settings which is set to Automatic

Do these need to be changed?

Edit: I meant to add that when I try to download and install the all in one software that the other guy recommended earlier, it cant find the printer to install the driver software, but at some point it asks if the wireless light on the printer control panel is on. The only wireless symbol I see is on the Control panel display part of the Control panel. The user's manual I have shows that there is supposed to be a wireless button on the right side of the panel underneath the numeric keypad. But that section of my Control panel is not illuminated, so I can't tell if the Wireless light is on. Can you help me understand this?

I'm starting to get frustrated!

I had added a reply on Sunday but it must have not been saved, so I'll try to repeat it.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that I'm trying to connect the printer via Ethernet; I'm trying to use wireless.

A couple of things have changed:

I called my ISP from whom I got the new router that was installed along with my new computer. They turned UPnP on and this eventually allowed the Wireless setup on the Printer control panel to assign a valid IP address. It went from 169.254.111.148 (which was the AutoIP value I mentioned earlier) to 192.168.1.73. There were a couple of other tweaks involved, but eventually the printer showed up in my Devices and Printer page. Unfortunately, Windows said it was not connected. I tried to print a test page but the Print queue page showed an error status. Last but not least, when I look at the printer in Device Manager it says that it has no driver. I tried to install the Full Feature Driver but it couldn't find the printer!

So I'm still stuck, and I'm getting frustrated. In addition to any guidance you or Elohi_NR can provide, can you please verify that the Officejet Pro 8500 is actually supported in Windows 11, which is my Operating system. I have seen conflicting information on the HP Printer pages.

I have attempted to post a couple of updates to this thread but for some reason they are being deleted as spam. Can someone familiar with this forum help me? I really don't want to go to the trouble of typing a long reply only to have it deleted.
