HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer
Other

Upgraded Mac to Sonoma. Now my printer won't connect as a scanner. I've been reading comments that the HP won't connect to Sonoma. I can't install new driver or anything else that can be downloaded. My Mac can't open any of them. I can print, but I can't scan. When given options,  there is no scanner option.

When I try to download recommended software or firmware for the 8720, the message is that none can be found for this product. I suspect it's the Sonoma causing the problem, but wouldn't HP come up with software/firmware to work with it?

Hi @dianea10

1. You may need to connect a USB cable from your printer to Macbook before the installation.

2. Then, please download and install  HP Printer drivers for MacOS from the next link:

3. And go to System Preferences > Printers then Add the printer.

When I click on the link you give, I get the message "the page you're looking for can't be found. Also the printer doesn't like the USB  that I'm using - that message says "the device you connected is not supported through this device. disconnect the  device"

I have the same problem with my HP OfficeJet Pro 9018

Same problem with HP office jet pro 6970 series

I have HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 series and couldn't scan to any destination with new iOS Sonoma, on 3.3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5.  Then I discovered that by selecting 'desktop' as the destination it enabled scanning as usual, combining docs etc.  I also deleted my printer then added it back (may have helped).  It uses AirPrint (whatever that is), which according to Apple is a necessary compatibility for the printer to work with macOS.

How did you change the destination to desktop?  I can't seem to find an option.

I have the opposite problem - I can scan but I can't print.  I spent 30 minutes on the phone with support and they told me Sonoma is not compatible with my printer, and there will be no updates.  They bricked my printer then had the guts to try to tell me a printer is like an iphone...

Guess who's buying a new printer from ANYONE other than HP!?!?!

It's 12.28.23 and I have still having the same problem described above -- HP Office Jet Pro 6978 that stopped working (that is scanning) upon upgrading to Sonoma.

I've updated Mac OS with the last two updates (now 14.2.1) in hopes that Apple was addressing this but still does not work. I have also installed the latest HP drivers and also followed the advice above, followed the link, downloaded & installed the 500+ MG driver package and tried scanning using both the HP Easy Start software and the Mac built-in Image Capture utility. Printing is fine, scanning however still does not work.

I've restarted both the printer and computer many times. I've tried everything but contacting a psychic.

Apple appears to not care and I'm hoping HP isn't too big to care as well. Curious to if anyone who has an HP scanner and who has upgraded to Sonoma is NOT having problems. Thank you to all in advance for any help. I work from home and inability to scan is becoming quite an issue.

Happy New Year!
