Microsoft Windows Server 2019

Good day.
I've configured one HP Color LaserJet flow MFP M880 to work with my Windows Server 2022 using Microsoft IPP Class Driver. I have done this because our security team doesn't allow us to use 9100 port anymore. They requested IPP to be used (port 631).
It turns out that the print operations using Microsoft IPP Class Driver are slower than using 9100 default port. Reading this forum I found that this could be caused by using Microsoft IPP Class Driver and not a HP driver.
I downloaded the HP Smart Universal Printing Driver and installed the driver using the existing port for the IPP printer (the one that starts with WSD), but when launching a test page, it throws and error and can't print.
I also tried to install the newest drivers configuring a TCP/IP port to 631, but this doesn't reach the printer either.

Is there a way to configure IPP protocol with the HP port, so the print operation is faster? Do you have any other secure port I can use with HP drivers?

Configuring IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) with the HP port instead of using the Microsoft IPP Class Driver can indeed help improve performance and ensure better compatibility with HP printers. Here's how you can configure IPP using HP drivers on your Windows Server 2022.

 

Create a Standard TCP/IP Port

  1. Open Print Management: Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Print Management or simply type printmanagement.msc in the Run dialog.
  2. Add a Printer: Right-click on "Printers" and select "Add Printer."
  3. Use an Existing Port or Create a New One: Choose "Create a new port," and select "Standard TCP/IP Port" from the dropdown list.
  4. Enter Printer IP Address:
    • Hostname or IP Address: Enter the IP address of your HP Color LaserJet Flow MFP M880.
    • Port Name: The system will auto-fill this, but you can change it if desired.
  5. Device Type: When prompted, select "Custom" and click "Settings."
  6. Port Configuration:
    • Protocol: Select "LPR."
    • Queue Name: Enter "ipp" or "print" (these are common queue names, but you may need to verify this on the printer's configuration).
    • LPR Byte Counting Enabled: Check this box.
    • SNMP Status Enabled: Disable this option if you encounter issues, or leave it enabled based on your network configuration.

Install HP Universal Print Driver

  1. Download the Driver: Ensure you have the latest version of the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD). You can download it from the HP website.
  2. Install the Driver: Run the installation file and choose the option to install the driver without a printer.
  3. Select the Installed Driver: During the printer installation process (where you added the Standard TCP/IP Port), select the HP Universal Print Driver that you installed earlier.
  4. Assign the Driver to the Port: After selecting the driver, ensure it is assigned to the newly created Standard TCP/IP Port.

Configure the IPP Settings

  1. Access Printer Properties: Once the printer is installed, right-click on it in Print Management and select "Printer Properties."
  2. Configure the Advanced Tab:
    • Under the "Advanced" tab, ensure that the correct driver (HP Universal Print Driver) is selected.
    • Set the "Spool print documents so program finishes printing faster" option if desired, or try "Print directly to the printer" to compare performance.
  3. Ports Tab: Double-check that the port configuration matches the one you set up (Standard TCP/IP with the IPP settings).

Test the Configuration

  1. Test Print: Send a test page to the printer to ensure it prints correctly.
  2. Monitor Performance: Compare the print performance against the Microsoft IPP Class Driver to verify the improvement.

Note:

  • Firmware Update: Ensure that the HP Color LaserJet Flow MFP M880 has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes firmware updates can enhance IPP performance.
  • Security Ports: If your security team allows, consider using IPP with TLS/SSL (port 443) for encrypted communication. This can be set up on some HP printers and is more secure than using port 631.

Alternative Secure Port:

  • Port 443 (IPP over HTTPS): If your printer and network support it, using IPP over HTTPS (port 443) can provide secure communication while potentially improving performance. This requires enabling IPP over HTTPS on both the printer and the server.

 

By following these steps, you should be able to configure IPP using the HP drivers, potentially improving print operation speed and compatibility.

Good day Alden4. 
Thank you for your reply. I have tested the following port configurations with no success.


Port1
Protocol: LPR (it shows it uses port number 515)
Queue name: ipp
LPR Byte Counting Enabled: Yes
Driver: HP Universal Printing PCL 6

Port2
Protocol: LPR (it shows it uses port number 515)
Queue name: ipp
LPR Byte Counting Enabled: Yes
Driver: HP Universal Printing PS (v7.2.0)

Port3
Protocol: Raw
Port number: 443

None of them worked, but I believe it has something to do with firewall restrictions on the new ports. We were directed to use 631 port only. Please help me confirm ports 443 and 515 are required for using HP Universal Printing drivers so I can start requesting them to be opened.
