Hi @DrStambough,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're having trouble with the PIN number during the setup of your HP Color LaserJet 4301. The PIN is typically used for security purposes, often during the network setup or to access certain features like email printing or cloud printing. However, if the PIN isn't working, it could be due to a few different reasons. Let’s go through some steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Check for Typing or Entry Errors

Sometimes the issue could simply be a typing error when entering the PIN. Double-check that you're entering the correct PIN as it was provided during the setup process. If you manually set it, make sure it was entered correctly without any typos or misreading.

2. Reset the PIN or Admin Password

If you can't remember the PIN, or it’s not working, it might be possible to reset the PIN or the admin password for the printer.

To reset the PIN or password on the printer:

  1. Press the Home button on the printer’s control panel.
  2. Navigate to Settings or Setup using the control panel.
  3. Look for Network Settings or Admin Settings (it may vary depending on your printer's interface).
  4. Locate the option to reset the admin password or PIN (this may be under Security Settings or Device Settings).
  5. Follow the prompts to reset the PIN or password.

If your printer is connected to a Wi-Fi network, resetting the PIN might also reset the network settings, so you may need to reconfigure the printer’s Wi-Fi settings afterward.

3. Power Cycle the Printer

Sometimes, power cycling the printer can help clear out any software or connectivity issues that may be affecting the PIN functionality.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the printer from the power outlet.
  3. Wait for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  5. Try entering the PIN again during the setup process.

4. Reset Network Settings (If PIN Is for Network Setup)

If the PIN is part of the network setup (e.g., for connecting the printer to a wireless network or using features like HP’s ePrint), you can try resetting the network settings and starting the network configuration process again.

  1. Access the printer’s control panel.
  2. Navigate to Network Settings or Wireless Settings.
  3. Look for an option to Reset Network Settings or Restore Default Network Settings.
  4. Follow the instructions to reset the network settings.
  5. After resetting, the printer will likely prompt you to enter a new PIN or to go through the Wi-Fi setup again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
