Officejet Pro 7740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I need to setup an Officejet Pro 7740 in a small office environment with a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 10 laptops.

I need:

  • WSD disabled on the printer
  • Scan to computer (scan from the printer's control panel to a computer)

I tried following guide:

https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c03351547

Using following commands:

msiexec /i OJ7740_Full_WebPack_40.12.1161\OJ774x64.msi ENTERPRISE=YES FAX=NO MULTICAST=NO SCANTOPC=YES

"c:\Program Files\HP\HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 series\Bin\DeviceSetup.exe" /networkaddress 10.1.0.50

The second command always fails when WSD is disabled on the printer. When enabled it succeeds, but:

  • On Windows 7, the printer and scanner (and scan to computer from the printer's control panel) keep working if I disable WSD on the printer after installation. It's very annoying to have to enable WSD for every installation. Is there a way to install without enabling WSD?
  • On Windows 10,  the printer is installed as a WSD device although DeviceSetup.exe was given a network address. Also, there are multiple scan to computer entries on the printer's control panel for every computer, without the possibility to choose scanning to PDF or JPEG like the entry for the Windows 7 computer. How can I install the printer/scanner similar to the Windows 7 setup (working without WSD, and having just one entry per computer on the printer's control panel for scan to computer, with the choice of scanning to PDF or JPEG?

Best regards,

bds

Hi @bds_

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

To enable scan to computer option, you need to have the full-featured driver installed on all the PCs.

All Win 10 PCs use the WSD port to install the printer on a network by default.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

As initially stated, I specifically would like a Win 10 solution not using WSD, since the WSD setup proved to be very unreliable. Apparently this is possible on Win 7 (except for the initial installation). So two questions remain:

- How to install on Win7 with WSD disabled on the printer?

- How to install and use on Win10 with WSD disabledd on the printer?

Best regards,

bds

On a Win 10 PC, use the TCP/IP port to install the printer

  1. On the PC, go to Control panel > Devices and printers > Add a printer(at the top)
  2. Under 'Choose a device or printer', click on 'The printer I want isn't listed'.
  3. Select 'Add a printer using a TCP/IP address'
  4. Find the IP address of the printer by tapping on the wireless icon on the printer screen
  5. Type in the 'IP address in Hostname or IP address' box, click next
  6. Proceed to the next steps by following the on-screen instructions.

On a Win 7 PC, the printer does not get installed using the WSD port. You may go to the Hp Support site to download the full-featured driver.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

On Win10, I had already tried to install the printer using a TCP/IP port. This works fine for printing only. Scanning initiated from the Officejet Pro 7740 control panel does not seem to work, as the computer is not listed.

On Win7, there is indeed no WSD port installed, but somehow installation fails when WSD is disabled on the Officejet Pro 7740.

On Win 10, you may use the HP Smart app to scan

Click here to download and know more about the app.

On a Win 7 PC, you may install the printer using windows built-in driver, no other options available.

Refer to this document to know how.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Update:

after lots of testing, I can finally install the printer/scanner without WSD (using TCP/IP ), with following commands:

msiexec /i OJ7740_Basicx64_40.12.1161\OJ774x64.msi ENTERPRISE=YES FAX=NO MULTICAST=NO SCANTOPC=YES

"c:\Program Files\HP\HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 series\Bin\DeviceSetup.exe" /networkaddress 10.1.0.50

  • installation on Win 7:
    • Enable SNMPv1/v2 Read-Only access on the device EWS.
    • WSD must be completely disabled on the device EWS (disable Microsoft WS-Discovery, Microsoft WSD print and Microsoft WSD scan).
  • installation in Win 10:
    • Enable SNMPv1/v2 Read-Only access on the device EWS.
    • There seems to be a problem with the installer when Microsoft WSD print is disabled on the device EWS. Disable Microsoft WS-Discovery and Microsoft WSD scan and enable Microsoft WSD print on the device EWS before installation.
    • After installation, also disable Microsoft WSD print, remove the installed WSD printer and reinstall the printer using a standard  TCP/IP port.

Remarks:

  • There is no need to install the full feature driver to get scan to computer to work.
  • The work around for Win10, enabling WSD print before installation and disabling WSD print after installation, is a pain when installing on a large number of workstations.

Any chance the driver installation can be fixed to allow installation without WSD print enabled on Win10?

Best regards,

bds

@bds_, glad to know that you found a solution.

HP drivers are designed to use WSD ports to install the printer on a WIN 10 OS. It is a default protocol set by Microsoft. The only workaround is to install it using the TCP/IP port.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
