Doing to certainly defeats the purpose of an organized and proper shutdown process.
I would guess you might get away with it a couple of times - maybe - crashing the printer is certainly harder on the printer than using the intended on / off switch.
Crashing the printer IS a process to overcome certain shutdown issues - the procedure can provide a "reset" of the printer functions. Using the process as a means to switch the printer on / off is not recommended.
I'd not do this to a functional printer.

Hi,
The printer is inside a unit, with the ON/OFF button at the back, so it's inconvenient, this is why I ask.
What do you call 'crashing' the printer. It's just sitting there doing nothing and the power goes OFF.

Printer when asleep is only active on a low level - Yes, it can appear to be "doing nothing" from the outside.
Switching the power off using the on / off switch is the proper method to shut down the printer - the shutdown process includes setting the cartridges into the rest position and disconnecting other services.
Yanking the power is not the same thing.
Ignore the word crash if it bothers - the intent is to describe a sudden removal of power from a device that doesn't expect it and does not get the chance to use its normal shutdown routines.
Were it me, I'd not "remove power" as a means to shut down the printer.
Not me... It's you and you must do what you will.
If you have problems with your method, you'll find out soon enough.
If all's well, then - that's what you want.
Yes, in my opinion, having the switch on the back side of the printer is inconvenient.

Hi,
I see there is an automatic shutdown after 2hours. This should work shouldn't it?
I tried it over night, but it was still ON.
NOTE: I have a mate who is paralysed, in a wheel chair, and he was saying that he always does it the MAINS/OFF method, because he has to. If this is not satisfatory for the printer, then HP, should make it work.

We are now moving outside discussing the recommended guidelines for using the printer.
I cannot address mobility limitations. I am not qualified to do so.
I cannot address what HP should do. I do not work for HP and I cannot speak for HP.
Please contact HP Support - contact information is provided later in this message.

Leaving the printer on and letting it sleep is the ideal solution - printers are made to "sleep" when not in use.
For example,
Allowing the printer to "Sleep" means that the printer can wake itself to do necessary maintenance on the ink system when needed.
Modern printers are made to sleep when not being used.

For those reading:
"Auto-Off" and other the other printer features are described in the printer manual.
Page 14
Auto-Off
This feature turns the printer off after 2 hours of inactivity to help reduce energy use. Auto-Off turns the printer off completely, so you must use the Power button to turn the printer back on. If your printer supports this energy-saving feature, Auto-Off is automatically enabled or disabled depending on printer capabilities and connection options. Even when Auto-Off is disabled, the printer enters Energy Save Mode on page 114 after 5 minutes of inactivity to help reduce energy use.
● Auto-Off is always enabled if the printer does not have network or fax capability.
● Auto-Off is disabled when a printer’s wireless or Wi-Fi Direct capability is turned on or when a printer with fax, USB, or Ethernet network capability establishes a fax, USB, or Ethernet network connection

If the printer is in Warranty, I recommend that you contact HP Support and ask your questions. HP speaks for HP.

If you just turn off the mains then it is possible that the printer will not park and cap the print heads so that they will not dry out. Always best to turn the 6420 off by its' own power button on the back. You'll hear the print head carriage traverse to its' parked position, then you can shut the mains juice off :).

Hi,
I inititated a query to HP, at the same time as the first question here, but so far no reply.
I placed a strip of paper over the ink docking section, closed lid, left it for a while, switched it off at the mains, openned the lid, and the paper was trapped, so it does dock the catridges.
My disabled friend and I will carry on this way, to suit our situations.
Thanks.

You are welcome.
As I mentioned originally, regardless of ought else, you must do what you can do.
Whether the printer likes or dislikes the decision is not the main point, I think.
Regardless of the a manual says, life is not always going to agree.
Yes, I still think the button might have been better located in the front of the device.
I will forward your concerns to moderators for review.
It is important to be heard.
Stay Safe.
Carry on.
