I've gone through numerous steps to try to find a driver and gotten to HTTPdr.exe which advised that WindowsXP was supported by an older hp program. It opened a small box to download, but that failed. I'm stumped. i have gotten our two laptops connected wirelessly - obviously newer; but I'd like to be able to print using the WindowsXP if possible.

Welcome to the HP Support Community
Yes, it is possible to connect the printer with a wireless connection.
Note: Check the router band: Many routers can operate in both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequency bands, but not all HP printers support both bands. Make sure the 2.4 GHz router band is enabled and broadcasting. If the router broadcasts separate network names (SSIDs) for each band, connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz band SSID.
Printer and the computer should be connected to the same network.
Connected the printer to the computer using the USB cable.
Then, Use the below link for Changing from a USB to a Wireless Connection.
