I was asked to give access to my computer to enable the technician to get my printer connected. I stupidly did and was informed my computer was infected with a Trojan virus and I needed firewall protection. This would cost £299 -£599 dependent on the duration I opted for. I ended the call totally freaked out. I have resolved the issue (no virus on my computer, no not infected) by contacting my grandson who did a sweep. Is this common practice

Yes, I have the same encounter observing the HP assigned - tech to ask me to allow him to get into my devise “Rescue”, that he was searching for my IP Address - which has nothing to do with the issue on hand - then, I cut him off from my device. Saying thank you…! Now, I wonder if my IP Address could be used for criminal activities. Under these loud events of fraudulent cases why HP doesn’t have a rigid protocol to avoid these instants.

The challenge here is that there are many fraudulent companies advertising all over the web and using copycat websites with very similar URLs but have nothing at all to do with HP. If someone is asking you for money, then it is very unlikely that you are actually talking to HP but rather one of the scam companies.
I am a volunteer, offering my knowledge to support fellow users, I do not work for HP nor speak for HP.
