HP Office Jet 4650 All in one printer
Microsoft Windows XP

I recently bought a new HP Office Jet 4650 All-in-one printer to use with an old Dell laptop that is running Microsft Windows XP version 2002.  (My laptop is not connected to the internet, nor has it been in over 10 years.)  I tried loading the printer software using the CD and a USB cable connection with the printer.  Although it appeared to copy over all the files, I got an error message saying it had not been properly installed.  I then followed the directions to restart my computer, unplug the USB, and try the CD.  I then received the error message: "the procedure entry port GetLogicalProcessorInformation could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNAL32.dll."  If I clicked OK to the message, or if I later tried double clicking on the CD drive icon, my computer had a fatal error.

Is my computer's operating system too old to run this printer, and/or can I do anything to make them compatible, such as download a printer driver to a thumb drive in place of connecting my old laptop to the internet?  When I looked through the list of programs on my computer I found Windows Installer 3.1 and Windows XP Pack 2.  I have already tried removing any previously used printers from the default printer and from the driver list.  Any help would be appreciated.  Many thanks!

If the system is running XP 32bit and it is loaded with any applicable service packs, then the latest version of the Full Feature Software might run / install (XP 32 bit shows as included / supported).

HP OfficeJet 4650 series Full Feature Software and Drivers

You do have to have a means to get the driver (software installation package) where the computer can load it.

For example:

If the system has a USB port, download and save the software to a USB Drive; try installing from the USB Drive -- or copy the executable from the USB drive into the computer and run the installation.

Reminder:

If using a USB cable to connect the printer and computer,

  • Disconnect the cable between the printer and the computer before installing the software
  • Connect the USB cable between the printer and the computer when instructed (toward the end of the procecdure to install the software).

If you have not done so -- and assuming you can get the printer Software to install, consider the printer Firmware update:

The use of the words "might" and "try" are deliberate.

I have not used XP in lots of years.

It has been even longer that I have used a system isolated from a network.
