Unfortunately, that too did not work.  This is what occurred:

Hi @MikeL53,

Ok, looks like something is not working on your Windows 11 Home, maybe this computer needs to be restored to install a fresh Windows system.

Do you know if this Windows version is in Secure mode - Windows 11 S-mode ?

Meanwhile you could try to install driver with HP Print Doctor:

Hi  @ferRX , My OS is just Windows 11 Home, not in S mode.  I downloaded and installed the HP Smart Universal Printing (V3) (v4.01.2) driver.  It shows as a printer available to use im MS Office-Word and Excel, and also when I go to print out an email.  The HP Smardt Universal printing was made the default printer.  However, it does not print from any of these apps.  I checked that the USB port was the one that was checked in the properties for the HP Smart Universal Driver.  I might try using the standard TCP/IP port instead.

If you keep on coming up with possible fixes, I will try them. The warranty on the HP Deskjet 4158e is running out by the end of November. I hope I won't have to exercise that solution.  I am still hoping HP and Microsoft can figure out a solution.  The customers should not have to.

I am not sure exactly what I did. but this past weekend, the HP 4158e multi function printer was finally able to print,  from both the Smart Print App and other program (ie. Outlook, MS Word).   I had downloaded  Easy Start (https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/DJ4100/HPEasyStart-13.6.5-DJ4100_51_4_4868_1_Webp...) and had as usual deleted unsuccessful Printer addition, as well as the printer listed from the Device Manager.  I reran the Easy Start, and after a very long time, it seemed to download the proper driver.  I went back to "printers and Scanner", found the HP 4100 series printer, and  made sure it had this driver for HP Smart Printing ,and made sure the printer port was a HP Smart Printing port.  I made sure it was the default printer.

This was done after I had "reset this PC" , re-installing windows, while keeping personal files.  Perhaps that helped.  I don't know.  At least I can now both print and scan from the HP Deskjet 4158e Multi-function printer that is next to my Desktop computer, while still able to print from a Windows 10 Laptop, and an Android phone.  I want to thank especially @ferRX for sticking with me for a long time, and giving many helpful suggestions.
