Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all

I've updated windows to the latest fall creators update and its screwed up my printer settings. I now have lost permission to change any settings etc and despite downloading and updating the drivers its the same. Basically everything is locked so I can't turn on borderless for instance....

I've been on the MS forums and they suggested a few things - none of which have worked. These include changing spool setting, uninstalling the printer etc, deleting packages and even doing a repair install of window10. They've all failed.

Whenever I install the printer drivers, even from the original CD, it will only install the basic driver software, not the full software.

I'm running a x64 PC with windows10 pro. I've checked all the administrator settings and amended these too.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this as I've already spent 3 days trying to sort this out !

thank you

Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums After reading your post I see that you are unable to change the printer settings after updating Windows 10. I will be a delight to assist you here.

Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. 🙂  Kudos to you on that score.:)

Perform root level uninstalltion to remove all the printer related software's.

  • Press the Windows key + R on the keyboard to bring up the run menu.colot
  • Type %temp% in the run field, and click OK.
  • Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
  • Open folder Util
  • Open folder CCC
  • Run the uninstall_ L4.bat
  • When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
  • Press the Windows key + R on the keyboard to bring up the run menu.
  • Type %programfiles% in the run field and click OK.
  • Delete any HP/Hewlett Packard folders.

Download and install full feature driver

Hey Sandytechy20

Thank you for replying (and the kudos!) - I've tried your instructions but my files don't have the CCC folder listed - I have four folders starting with 7 and although they all have the utils that's as far as it goes. I have however tried deleting all of the these after unistalling using the 'remove preinstalled devices' from within the utils folders, deleted all temp files for HP and all registry entries for HP, cleaned the registry etcetc - reinstalled - but no joy. It will literally only install the basic drivers. I think i might cry ....:(

It looks like you were interacting with sandytechy20, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out. I'm KrazyToad & I'm at your service.

I have gone through your case. Let's try these steps.

First uninstall the Printer Driver from Root level

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers

Next grant permissions to the Printer Folder.

1.) Press Windows Key + R for Run Command – Type spool   > Click the Printers Folder and delete all the files and folders inside.
2.) Press Windows Key + R for Run Command – Type spool – Right Click on Printers folder – From the drop down click on Properties – Click on Security Tab – Click on Edit under Group or user names – One by one give permissions for all – Click on Apply and then OK.

Then download the Full Feature Software from this Link: https://hp.care/2GlcOhv

Keep me posted how it goes.

Thank you 🙂

Hey Krazy Toad

Thank you for this instruction. It still hasn't worked but I've also had issues with getting the instant ink to work as well and having gone into the smart help and the web services I notice that it says instant ink is disabled.  And when I try to connect to it and activate my instant ink it won't print the page containing my code either.....microsoft have clearly done something really stupid!!!! I've tried this fix on my laptop which has windows home instead of pro so its the same issue across both builds.

I'm just beyond angry with microsoft!!!!   Not sure what to do now. I even tried downgrading my PC to the last build but it wouldn't let me do that either because it couldn't find a drive to partition without wiping them all....grrrr!

OK thank you. I think it might be an issue with the printer itself or the USB maybe as I've reset my PC back to the original build and its doing the same thing. And when I ran the MS print troubleshooter its started to say that the USB device might not be compatible with a USB 3.0 - its never said that before and was working fine.

I'll give them a ring...thanks so much for your help so far 🙂
