@Mars04, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing lagging issues and missing desktop files on your HP laptop. Let's go through a few steps to troubleshoot and resolve this:
Check for Malware or Unwanted Software
High CPU and memory usage can often be caused by malware or background processes.
Run a full system scan using Windows Security:
- Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Click Quick scan or Full scan.
Clean Up Startup Programs
Too many startup apps can slow down your system.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Startup tab.
- Disable unnecessary apps (right-click > Disable).
Use HP Support Assistant
HP Support Assistant can automatically detect and fix many issues.
- Open HP Support Assistant from the Start menu.
- Go to My Devices > Your Laptop > Troubleshooting and Fixes.
- Run Performance Tune-up Check.
If you don’t have it installed, download it here: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support
Recover Missing Desktop Files
Sometimes files may be moved or hidden due to profile issues.
- Check if you're logged into the correct user account.
- Navigate to:
C:\Users\YourUsername\Desktop
or
C:\Users\Public\Desktop - Use Windows Search to look for a known file name.
If files are still missing, try using File History or System Restore:
- Restore files from File History
Update Windows and Drivers
Outdated drivers or OS can cause performance issues.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Also, update drivers via Device Manager or HP Support Assistant.
Check Resource Usage
Use Task Manager to identify which processes are consuming the most resources.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- In the Processes tab, sort by CPU and Memory.
- Note any suspicious or high-usage apps.
Optional: Perform a System Reset
If the issue persists, consider a Windows Reset (this can keep your files or remove everything):
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
