I attempted a firmware update on my Laser Jet P3005dn (model Q7815A). The update never finished, and I received an Update Failure message. Upon restart, the display says "Downld file now 1/6 SEND RFU UPGRADE". This is where I am stumped. The firmware update utility generates file, but does not seem to actually update the printer's software. Is there any way to clear and repair the printer's software?

to fix this issue you need to re-update the firmware. If you get the acknowledgement beep when you plug the usb cable into your computer there is hope.
1- on your PC, go to control panel>devices and printer and add a new printer. When Windows starts to search, click the "printer not found" option at the bottom and then select the option for manually install local printer
2- Chose existing port option on next screen and pick the first USB port you see on the dropdown list. You may have many listed.
3- When prompted for driver select any HP lasejet jet, it does not matter. When promoted for name call it "usb fix"
4- Download and run the current easy firmware update program for your printer and when prompted for printer, select the "usb fix" printer you just created.
5- If you lucked out and selected the correct USB port the firmware will start to upgrade. If not, nothing will happen. After waiting a couple of minutes, if it does not start, on your PC go to control panel>devices and printers and right click on the icon for "usb fix" and select printer properties from the middle of the dropdown menu. Click on the ports tab and select the next USB port on the list and click "apply". Wait a couple of minutes. Repeat this until the printer starts to receive the firmware.
6- Firmware install will complete unit will restart and should work. You may need to reinstall your printer to be able to print but the error will be gone.
The other way is to create the usb printer, then share it out. Then from a dos command window you copy the .RFU file (remote firmware upgrade, downloadable from support.hp.com)
syntax for the copy
copy /b <FILENAME> \\<SHARENAME>\<PRINTERNAME>
- <FILENAME>: The full path and name of the .rfu file. Enclose in quotation marks if spaces are present.
- <SHARENAME>: The network share name of the computer sharing the printer.
- <PRINTERNAME>: The shared name of the printer.
