I have solved this on my 2014 retina running Big Sur,

Browse to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/cp1020series/hpcp1020filter.plugin/Contents/Resources/

Check the year hpcp1020 was created, in my case it was 2015 and none of the installers updated that file.

So how to fix this

Open the  "HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS“ disk image mentioned here with Pacifist.

Browse to '/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/cp1020series/hpcp1020.plugin/Contents/MacOS' in the image and find the file hpcp1020. I believe this is the 64bit binary. Click extract within Pacifist and replace the old file.

Tada!

Im having the exact same issue and its absolutely doing my head in. I have been through every forum and tried every which way possible including everything you have tried and still no success. I have come to the same conclusion that HP need to release a dedicated printer driver for Big Sur for the CP1025NW. Its just ludicrous how one program finds the printer but then when its nearing completion it cannot find the printer driver and tells you to download the new software that will do the job and then that software can't even find the printer. I've ended up down a rabbit hole of 30+ tabs open in safari researching only to land at the portal to contact customer support for further help. Then I have a new issue. They want to know the serial number of my printer and I can't for the life of me find it anywhere. I've looked everywhere and even where it states the serial should be located in the hp support. I bought this printer many years ago and they expect me to have kept my paperwork. If anyone can tell me where it is located I would be grateful. Its not going to fix the issue but it will set my mind at ease as right now I want to dismantle the thing just to find it (won't be doing that by the way).

So yeah, come on HP. This is really slack. Ive just bought a complete new set of genuine inks that has cost me around $500 and being on a disability pension I just can't afford to waste that money and outlay more for a new printer if HP has decided to discontinue support for the product. It would take 10 mins for the driver to be created and added to the bundle. But please HP, can you not discontinue this product as it is a fantastic printer and has been perfect for its entire 10+ year lifespan and Ive kept it in great condition and it prints just as good as it did when it was new. This really has got me soooooo frustrated. It just shouldn't have happened and I see no reason for it other than a way for HP to generate more income at the consumers expense. C'mon HP, play fair please. I'm certainly not the only one having this issue and from my research people have been wanting it now since the release of Big Sur. Its 4;30am and I've been trying to get a result since 9pm last night.

Can you Mr Jay_G24 Support guy please follow this up again and come back with a solution that works.

Thanks very much, I look forward to your reply

G'day mate, did you end up getting a solution to this missing printer driver issue?

HP Recommended

Sorry mate, but no success here so far. Even tried the fancy way MarcusK1 was suggesting, but still the same issue popping up when trying to print. – If you're still looking for your Serial No., I found mine here (see photo):

In case that photo doesn't show up: Open top flap, then fully open front flap, there on the inside.

I actually just found the serial number myself too. Never knew this entire time that the front panel came off. Yeah I'm really pissed man. Ive just moved house, bought all new shiny gear setting up a home business including the new inks for $500 whereas if I'd known this was going to be an issue I would have bought a newer printer instead for less than the cost of the 4 inks. I mean its a great printer and has never let me down so why stop supporting it. Unless they can provide the minor request to to provide the update or even just a simple 1 driver installer then there would be no excuse and it would be just revenue raising. NOT HAPPY! I will do my best to push for a solution. They should just fix it and make everyone happy. The longer it goes on and the more consumers get effected the worse off and damaging it will be to the HP brand. Its a no brainer as far as I'm concerned..

Thanks for the pic too mate, appreciate it!

Hey Dennis,

Open Console and click 'Start' at the top of the window and then print then 'Stop'

This will capture your error, Post here and I will give any advise I can and F@@K HP.

Possibly try add HP Laserjet 1022 driver 1.61 after resetting the Print system as I failed to mention in the previous post.

God knows i've tried so much. I do now have a working printer, it even screams that I'm using non HP toners 🙂

My last failure before this post was as follows, it pointed me to replace hpcp1020 as it was highlighted in the error

Hi Jay,

Rather than a one on one support request can your techies please get onto producing this printer driver. It has really caused me a lot of grief after I spent nearly $500 for a new set of inks ready to go in and being on the disability pension I just don't have that sort of money to waste and I now am stuck without a printer and no money to be able to buy a new one. PLEASE can you address this publicly as there's more than 1 of of us here and will be more I would imagine having the same issue.

Thank you,

Dave
