HP Laserjet 5M (PS)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Is there a Windows 10 driver that works with Laserjet 5M with Postscript? Win10's setup wizard does not list the 5M. Autodetect selects a driver for HP LaserJet Pro CP1525 PCL6, which produces an output page with UnsupportedProtocol error. I tried a similar driver with PS instead of PCL in the name, but that one doesn't even produce a page. Is there a newer model whose driver would also work with the 5M w/PS, or is it finally just too old?

"The Color LaserJet 5 and 5M only have a Postscript driver available. The Color LaserJet 5M uses the PostScript (PS) language for printing and has a PS language module installed. The Color LaserJet 5 did not have the PS language module installed but did have an optional PS module available. The Postscript driver will not work with the Color LaserJet 5 unless it has the optional PS language module installed. For color printing on a Color LaserJet 5, consider searching the Web for a PostScript module for this printer, and then obtain the driver from Windows Update. "

It also seems like the only supported connection is via a network connection.

"Windows Update - In most cases, this will include the full feature, printer-specific driver in Windows Update for the Windows 10 operating system (OS). For older printers, this driver provides print-only functionality (no scan features). Select printers will also have basic WIA support. Use Devices and Printers to run Windows Update and obtain the latest drivers and updates."

So according to HP you have to obtain the correct driver from Windows Update in one way or another.  I'd assume that since this printer is so old it has model specific drivers for it, meaning you cannot hijack drivers from other models very easily.  You can keep on testing other drivers from others that are available from MS and could get lucky though.  We normally fall back on the old Laserjet 4000 driver for legacy printer support.

It might just be too old.

John, Thanks for the response. Upon your suggestion, I went back and tried all Laserjet 4000 series postscript drivers. None of them would print a test page, so at this point I'm concluding there is no Win10 driver that will work with this old printer.

I did an in-place upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and the Laserjet 5M (b/w) is right there and works fine.  So something does exist.

I did a clean install of Win 10 on another machine, and it can't find the drivers for the Laerjet 5M. So something's wrong....

(printer is connected via network)

I have the same problem with the 5M printer. When I did the update to Windows 10 from Windows 7 everything worked fine. Had a hard disk fail and reinstalled on a new hard drive. Now it does not recognize the HP 5M. The drivers from Windows 7 for the 5M work if you can get them. Still have not found the duplex drivers. Miss being able to print both sides at the same time.
