HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553n
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a Color Laserjet M553N with a tray 3 added to it's configuration. I'm in the process of migrating all our drivers to v4 versions to solve issues with installation rights.

There is a type 4 driver available for this printer, I've installed this on my print server and configured the printer. I've had to manually add the tray 3 as it does not auto detect this. When this is done the printer settings for both tray 2 and tray 3 work fine. Now when I connect a workstation to the shared printer the tray 3 is missing again and the user has no rights to add this as they're not allowed to manage the printer. The result is that all configuration details about which tray has which paper size is missing.

I'm currently using driver version 8.0.1329.6764.

The HP universal type 3 driver correctly detects tray 3 and so do the workstations but this driver won't load due to driver installation limitations on type 3 drivers.

How is it possible that the universal driver picks up the extra tray by default but the specific driver for this printer doesn't?
