HP Smart Tank 7605 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

Got a brand new HP Smart Tank 7605 and am trying to set it up. In HP Smart when I try to Add Printer it immediately wants me to "allow HP Smart to access your location to find printers". I do that in Installed Apps, HP Smart, Location but then nothing happens. I don't know whether having set it to On (it was anyway) that I expect HP Smart to suddenly do something. Nor is there a "continue" button in Windows Settings. I've tried it again and again and get nowhere.

I set the WiFi password for my network on the printer (the old fashioned hard way) and managed to successfully set it up as a printer in Windows but in order to use it as a scanner I need to add it to HP Smart. Ironically I can easily add the printer in HP Smart on my Android  phone and use the scanner function from there but for now I cannot scan from Windows. So the  printer is connecting to the network just fine, it's just that HP Smart won't add it as a new device.

Please help. Is there a manual way to add the device on HP Smart or a stand alone scanner app?

Thanks,

Ken

@Hedgie66, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand you're having trouble adding your HP Smart Tank 7605 All-in-One printer to the HP Smart app on Windows 11, specifically due to the location access prompt not progressing. You're also looking for a way to scan from Windows since it's working fine on Android.

Let’s walk through a few steps to resolve this:

Step-by-Step Fix for HP Smart App Location Issue on Windows 11

Ensure Location Services Are Enabled Globally:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location.
  • Make sure Location Services is turned On.
  • Scroll down and ensure HP Smart is allowed to access location.

Reset HP Smart App Permissions:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > HP Smart > Advanced Options.
  • Click Reset to clear app data and permissions.
  • Reopen HP Smart and try adding the printer again.

Run HP Smart as Administrator:

  • Right-click the HP Smart shortcut and select Run as Administrator.
  • This can help bypass permission issues.

Use the “Add Printer Manually” Option:

  • In HP Smart, click “Add Printer”.
  • If it doesn’t auto-detect, click “Set Up a New Printer” or “My printer is not listed”.
  • Enter the printer’s IP address (you can find this on the printer’s control panel under Network Settings > Wi-Fi Summary).

Alternative: Use Windows Fax and Scan or Windows Scan App

If HP Smart still doesn’t work, you can scan using built-in Windows tools:

Windows Fax and Scan:

  • Search for it in the Start Menu.
  • Click New Scan, select your printer, and scan.

Windows Scan App:

  • Download from the Microsoft Store.
  • Simple and effective for basic scanning.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!

Thanks for that. I didn't think of running as administrator. As it happens, I found a "full webpack" source for this printer which included an HP scanner function and I already had it working as a Windows printer.

While waiting for some input I uninstalled HP Smart and then re-installed. This time (not running as admin) it prompted me right away to allow location, before reaching the point of "Add printer" and worked like a dream. No idea why.

IMHO the web pack plus Windows printer solution was much easier. As has been said before, I don't see what value HP Smart adds!

this did not help me hook HP Smart up to my printer.

why does it need location? when I used HP Scanner it found the scanner INSTANTLY.

i need this in order to set up the shortcut to Scan to Email. HP Smart is the only way to do it!

also, i'm not seeing how to run HP Smart as an Administrator. I right-click on the shortcut and that's not an option. perhaps because it's a Microsoft Store App?
