Example: HP Pavillion i7
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Envy 4527 worked great for years. Recently upgraded to Windows 11 - hated it - reverted back to Windows 10.  Everything back to normal EXCEPT my Envy.

It is still recognized and connected to HP Smart.  There is still the same Envy listed on Windows Printers and in Device Manager.

It will scan using HP Smart and HP Scan and Capture and it will copy documents but it WILL NOT print anything from any app, including HP Smart, on my main laptop.

It still prints from my phone and my wife's laptop.

On my laptop, which reverted to Windows10, it comes up with an 0x80070077 and 0x0004005 error when trying to print from HP Smart.  Seems to my limited knowledge to be a software/ driver issue.

If I try to change the preferences, it produces an error on rundll32.exe - "Function address 0x0007FF989394F69 caused a protection fault (exception code: 0x00000505) Some or all property pages may not be displayed.

I tried for days to get it to reconnect, eventually I uninstalled the printer from Windows and uninstalled HP Smart,  reinstalled through HP Smart but with the same result.

Any recommendations?

@CadriC, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to print from your computer. Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix any driver issue

Click here to download the file. Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and click on 'Fix printing'.

If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Install the printer using the TCP/IP port:

Check for any pending Windows updates first.

  1. On the PC, go to Control panel > Devices and printers > Remove the existing printer entry > click on Add a printer(at the top)
  2. Under 'Choose a device or printer', click on 'The printer I want isn't listed'.
  3. Select 'Add a printer using a TCP/IP address'
  4. Find the IP address of the printer by tapping on the wireless/ethernet icon on the printer screen
  5. Type in the 'IP address in Hostname or IP address' box, click next
  6. Proceed to the next steps by following the on-screen instructions.

Try printing.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

Hey Kumar.  Thanks for trying to help.

So I did as you said: HP Print Doctor did not find any printer.  Used Control Panel to (a) remove printer, then checked and installed all updates, rebooted then using Control Panel (b) install a new one using TCP/IP.

It added a printer named HP8ED169 (HP Envy 4520 Series) - exactly as I would expect.

In Settings the "new" printer is set to Default but states "Driver is unavailable."

However, when checking Hardware Properties the driver is set up to be a SCANNER!
The Drivers are ksthunk.sys / WSDScan.sys / WSDScDrv.dll

Tried Printer and Scan doctor again and it identifies TWO devices, the Printer AND another HP Envy "Scan Only - do not remove."

Can not print test page - nothing prints.  If I try to print from Word (I only have one Envy printer listed not two) I get a "Can not print due to a problem with printer setup."

So, I tried HP Smart again - No printers, so added "first" printer.  Looks to have installed fine BUT, can not print a document through HP Smart either as it generates a 0x80004005 error.

I can still scan using HP Scan and Capture and HP Smart but I can not print anything from any app on this laptop still.

@CadriC

When you install the printer using the TCP/IP address, you do not have to use any apps to print.

Just open the file, click on print.

If this does not help, I think this issue needs some additional technical assistance that can be better provided through one-on-one interaction or a remote session with our HP Support team.

Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for further assistance.

You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Hi Kumar,

You said I don't need any Apps, but I am referring to the Apps/Programs to "open" the documents with - Word, Excel, Paint etc, but also HP Smart, which has a print document and print test page option.

The weird thing is that all this time I was able to scan but not print but when trying just about everything yesterday I managed to get a test page printed - but not the standard test page but one for "web-connected", so I can now print by using the email address HP allocated to me - but that is such a n inconvenient way.

I was wondering if I should reset or roll-back all settings and reinstall Windows over the top (keeping data and apps)? Or would that be a waste of time?  I only want to reinstall Windows as a last resort.

Thanks for trying to help.

I've just noticed something:

When I try to install the printer manually - using the "My printer is not listed" method - it identifies the correct printer but it says the "This driver is not digitally signed".  This may be why it is not installing properly. Why would it not be signed and how do I get around that?  My options are "check on Windows Update" or "Have disk" - neither of which can find a driver.

@CadriC

It seems like a compatibility issue between the OS and the printer driver. There is no need for a 'digital signature' for the driver.

If the printer is installed using the IP address, you do not need to use an app to print. Just open the file to be printed, click on print.

For scanning, you may continue using the app.

If this does not help, as mentioned before, contact the HP Support team for a one on one interaction and assistance via a remote session.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
