M148fdw installation software hangs at Product Improvement Study screen.  There is a radio box for "in home use" and an un-labled numeric box the will not allow the "Continue" button to function, no matter what value is entered.

There was a work-around on closed thread but "user settings" options are no longer available.

Hi @Ora-Dad,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the installation software for your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148fdw hangs on the "Product Improvement Study" screen, where the "Continue" button is unresponsive, it can be frustrating. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Check for Software Updates

  • Visit HP Support: Go to the HP Support website and search for the M148fdw. Download the latest driver and installation software.
  • Re-download: Sometimes, re-downloading the software can resolve installation issues.

2. Run Installation as Administrator

  • Run as Administrator: Right-click the installation file and select “Run as administrator.” This can sometimes bypass permission issues that might cause the installer to hang.

3. Try a Different Installation Method

  • Use HP Smart: If the standard installer hangs, try using the HP Smart app to set up your printer. Download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store or the HP website.
  • Manual Installation: You can also try installing the printer manually:
    1. Download the Driver: Download the full feature driver from the HP website.
    2. Add Printer Manually:
      • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
      • Click Add a printer or scanner.
      • Follow the prompts to add the printer. You might need to use the printer’s IP address if it’s a network printer.

4. Check System Compatibility

  • OS Compatibility: Ensure that the installation software you’re using is compatible with your operating system (Windows version, etc.).
  • Check for Updates: Make sure your operating system is up-to-date with the latest patches and updates.

5. Disable Antivirus/Firewall Temporarily

  • Antivirus/Firewall: Sometimes, antivirus or firewall settings can interfere with the installation process. Temporarily disable them and try running the installer again. Be sure to re-enable them once the installation is complete.

6. Clear Temp Files

  • Clear Temp Files:
    1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
    2. Type %temp% and press Enter to open the Temp folder.
    3. Delete the files in this folder.
    4. Retry the installation.

7. Use a Different User Account

  • Different User Account: Sometimes user profile issues can affect installations. Try installing the software using a different user account with administrative privileges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
