HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

After my M283fdw updated the firmware to 20220729 and restarted, the TLS certificate that I installed reverted to a self-signed certificate.  I've tried numerous times to upload the certificate signed by my internal CA and every attempt to install it comes up with "The format of the file is invalid."  I've opened the pfx file on my windows box and my linux box without any issues. I've check to make sure that the certificate chain is not included in the pfx file (as recommended by several StackOverflow and community posts).  My internal CA certificate is installed on the printer (that didn't go away when it did the firmware update).  I had the printer create a CSR which I then signed and attempted to import.  That also fails.  

 

Based on what I've found from extensive searching, it would seem that the 20220729 firmware has a bug and it's now impossible to upload a certificate.  I've seen a number of suggestions regarding downgrading the firmware to an earlier version that does not appear to be broken, but I'd prefer not to possibly brick my printer.  Not sure how to log a bug report, so trying here to see if anyone has suggestions/recommendations on how to fix this.

To import a TLS certificate on an HP M283fdw printer, you can follow these steps.

 

  • Open a web browser on your computer and enter the printer's IP address in the address bar. This will take you to the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • In the EWS, click on the "Security" tab.
  • Click on the "Certificates" option.
  • Click on the "Import" button.
  • Browse to the location where you saved your TLS certificate and select it.
  • Enter the password for the certificate, if there is one.
  • Click on the "Import" button.

 

If you are still unable to import the TLS certificate, you may want to try a different web browser

Thank you for the response. The issue isn't that I don't know how to import a certificate. The issue is that when I do import a certificate, it always says the format is invalid. I've tried pem, cer, crt, pfx, x64-encoded, with and without private key, with and without the chain. What is the expected format of the certificate? The guides for the printer make no mention of what is required of the certificate or what format it needs to be in.

While I appreciate the response, a couple of things...  One, I successfully imported the certificate on the original firmware that came with the printer.  It was only AFTER a code upgrade that this no longer works which would indicate a code bug in the updated firmware.  Second, primarily just to prove a point, I used, Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, AND Firefox which represents 4 chromium engine variations and 1 other independent engine.  All 5 browsers show the same error.  I even re-created the certificate to test, same results.  Considering that the chromium engine-based browsers are considered the de-facto standard for purposes of website compatibility, I'd say if Chrome and the rest have a problem, it's not with browser compatibility.  If HP hasn't QA tested against chromium, then I must ask, what do they test with (assuming they actually did QA testing on this)?
