Brand new color laserjet pro MFP3301sdw - It refuses to do anything indicating "All Trays Empty" when the tray is loaded. Unplugged, restarted, looked in every accessible place, took paper out and reloaded, and nothing. Before I claim that it's a total piece of crap, maybe someone can steer me to salvation. It won't copy or print.

Hi @Menzill,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301sdw is having an issue where it isn't detecting paper in the trays, despite them being loaded. Here are some troubleshooting steps to try and resolve the issue:
1. Check Paper Tray Alignment:
- Ensure the paper is loaded correctly in the tray, with the guides snug against the paper without being too tight. The paper should be aligned with the edges of the tray.
2. Paper Detection Mechanism:
- The printer uses sensors to detect paper in the trays. Check if any paper sensor is blocked or dirty. You can gently clean around the paper path area using a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Look for any pieces of paper or debris that may be obstructing the paper detection sensor inside the tray or the printer itself.
3. Tray Settings:
- Make sure the tray settings match the paper size and type. For example, if you have set the paper size in the printer settings as "A4," but the tray is loaded with "Letter" paper, the printer may not detect the paper.
- Check the printer's settings for the paper size to ensure it matches what’s loaded.
4. Firmware Update: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes issues like this are fixed in firmware updates.
- You can check for firmware updates via the printer’s web interface or by downloading the latest firmware from HP's website.
5. Try a Reset:
- Perform a hard reset of the printer by turning it off, unplugging it from the power source, and leaving it unplugged for a minute or two. Then plug it back in and power it on.
6. Inspect the Tray Sensors:
- The issue could be due to a malfunctioning tray sensor. If the sensor is defective or misaligned, the printer will not detect the paper even when it’s loaded.
- If you feel comfortable, you can check for any misaligned or disconnected cables inside the printer that might be related to the paper tray sensors.
7. Test with Different Paper:
- Test using a different type or brand of paper. Some printers can be picky about the type of paper used, particularly with new printers.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
