For the MFP M227, software settings for printing are accessible by the user in both the computer screen and in the MFP device settings window. Is there anything clearly written as to which printer settings in the computer remain relevant, if any, when there are also printer settings in the printer-MFP? I am assuming that generally the settings in the printer itself override printer settings in the computer, when they conflict. If so, which printer settings in the computer are 'essential' and not duplicated in the printer settings in the printer window? [The context is the printer connected via USB to the computer, and not using HP printer management software to protect my non-HP cartridge from interference online.]

Hi @Frommt,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP MFP M227fdw printer has settings both on the computer and on the printer itself, and you want to know which settings remain relevant from the computer. Let’s go through a few steps to clarify this.

a. Understand Setting Precedence
 - Printer settings on the MFP device generally override conflicting computer settings.
 - Example: If duplex is off on the printer but selected on the computer, the printer may ignore the duplex request.

b. Essential Computer Settings
 - Page Range: Choose which pages to print; this is job-specific.
 - Number of Copies: Specifies how many copies to print for that job.
 - Color Mode / Grayscale: Can be set for individual print jobs.
 - Print Quality / Resolution: Job-specific DPI preferences.
 - Paper Source / Tray Selection: Select which tray or input to use for a specific job.
 - Scaling / Fit to Page: Adjusts document size for the page; processed by the driver.
 - Watermarks / Overlays / Collate: Added via driver, not stored on the printer permanently.

c. Printer-Controlled Settings
 - Default paper size and type for each tray
 - Duplex printing on/off
 - Toner save / Eco mode
 - Device security features (PIN printing, user authentication)
 - Network and connectivity settings

d. USB Connection Notes
 - When connected via USB, the computer driver controls job-specific settings.
 - Persistent printer defaults may still override driver defaults if not explicitly set in the print dialog.

e. Recommendations for Consistency
 - Manage general defaults like duplex, eco mode, and paper type directly on the printer.
 - Use the computer driver for job-specific settings like copies, page range, color mode, scaling, and watermarks.

I hope this helps.
