We have a M281cdw printer and randomly change the default language from English to Hebrew. This is the only printer that we have this problem with. We have other HP printers that we do not have this problem with. I have already updated the firmware and attempted a factory reset. I have the HP Smart app installed and have the default language set to English.

@Jones3735, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Check Printer's Language Settings via the Web Interface
- Access the Printer’s Web Interface:
- Find the IP address of your printer (you can print a network configuration page from the printer's menu or find it on the printer’s display under network settings).
- Open a web browser on your computer and enter the printer’s IP address.
- This will open the printer’s embedded web server (EWS).
- Change Language Settings:
- In the EWS, go to Settings or General Settings.
- Look for an option related to Language or Region Settings.
- Ensure that English is selected as the default language.
- Save the changes and restart the printer to apply the settings.
Reset to Default Settings via Printer Menu
Sometimes the factory reset through the settings may not fully reset all configurations.
- Go to the printer's Control Panel.
- Navigate to Setup > Restore Defaults.
- Select Restore All Settings or Restore Network Defaults to ensure that all settings are returned to the factory defaults, including language and region settings.

Check HP Smart App Settings
Since you have the HP Smart app installed, verify that the language settings on the app match the ones on the printer.
- Open the HP Smart App on your computer or mobile device.
- Go to Printer Settings and check the Language option.
- If the language is set to English, but the printer continues switching to Hebrew, try uninstalling and reinstalling the HP Smart App to reset its configurations.
Check for Network-Related Issues
If your printer is connected to a shared network, the language issue could be related to the network configuration:
- Check DHCP Settings: Ensure your printer is receiving the correct IP address and there is no network misconfiguration causing it to revert settings.
- Static IP: If the printer is on DHCP, you could try assigning a static IP to prevent any potential network interference.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue

Hi @Jones3735, Thank you for your response,
Update the firmware using the HP Printer Update utility.
- Set the language and country to a temporary setting.
- Select English as the language. You can change this later.
- Select your home country.
- Select Self-Managed
- Select Yes to confirm
- From the home screen, select the network icon to display the IP address.
- Take note of the IP address for a later step
- Connect a network cable to the printer. Make sure it's the same network to which the computer is connected.
- Go to HP.com.
- Expand the Driver - Universal Print Driver section.
- Download and install the driver.
- Locate the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6 (64-bit), click Download and click Run.
- Click Unzip.
- Follow the on-screen prompts, select Traditional Mode, and then select the Add a TCP/IP address option.
- Type the IP address you noted previously.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
note:
Do not skip this step. You must have a print driver installed in order to update the firmware.
- Return to the HP.com download page, and expand the firmware section.
- Download and update the firmware.
- Locate the HP LaserJet Pro Series Firmware Update Utility .exe file.
- Click Download, and then click Run.
- When the HP Printer Update utility launches on the computer, select the printer, and then click Update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation, and then click the OK button to close the utility.
note:
The firmware revision number might be the same version installed the printer. Download and update this version anyway. It is the same revision of firmware, but all languages are included. For detailed instructions, or for a video demonstration, go to HP LaserJet Pro - Update the printer firmware and follow the HP Printer Update utility method.
- Change the language and country setting from the printer control panel.
- From the printer Home screen, select the Tools icon to open the Setup menu.
- Select System Setup.
- Select Language.
- Select the preferred language and click Yes to confirm.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
