Hello,
I recently had a hard disk crash, which prompted me to upgrade to a new computer, as well as resurrect the old one with a new disk. Both computer are now running Windows 10.
I downloaded the lastest software package from the HP website, and can't seem to get the install to complete on either computer. I'll just deal with the brand-new one for now, assuming once I figure this out I'll be able to get the drivers installed correctly on the other one.
OK, each time I try to install the package, the software finds the printer on the network (computer has ethernet as well as the printer) and the install process appears to complete with no error messages. As a matter of fact, the install software indicates the installation was successful. However, there is no printer in the Devices and Printers control panel app, and none of the software applications are loaded. If I try to run the installation software again I'm told that the previous installation wasn't successful, as which point everything is uninstalled and the machine is rebooted. I've tried this a number of times. I've poked around in Event Viewer and didn't see anything logged there either.
I found this on your forum and tried it:
After this, at least the printer driver is loaded and functional (I can print a test page), but still no software apps (Scan, OCR, etc.). Again, the installation software reported a successful installation. I have rebooted just to make sure it wasn't something that gets loaded on boot.
Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Jim

I am having the same issue with the same model of printer (M477fdn) and operating system (Win10). The install gets to about 13%, gives me the green checkmark and says the install was successful. It never shows up in "devices and printers" and the scan software never shows up. I try to run the install again and it tells me the install was not successful. It uninstalls and I have to reboot. If anyone figures this out, I would be eternally grateful for a solution.

I also have the same issue. I recently purchsed a new Lenovo T560 computer and the first thing I tried to install was the M477 FUll installation. Nothng else was installed prior to this installtion, so nothing to conflict with. The installation went as others went in this thread. Installation progress to about 18% and then gets a succesful installation, but thing is installed. Also get the request to turn on sharing which is already on. Looking around this could be related to "Windows Installer' but not sure.
I submitted a case, but have not got a response yet. HP HELP!! If you can't install the software the hardware is useless. Need update fix fast!!!

@DRK31, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!
I understand that you are unable to install printer full feature software on your PC.
Don't worry I will try to help you out.
1. Go into the device manager and find the printer in the list of devices
2. Right click on the printer and select "Update Driver software"
3. Select browse my computer for driver software.
4. Select Let me pick from the list.
5. Select the driver named: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477 PCL-6.
6. Click next and check if the printer is working.
If the issue still persists, please install the basic drivers from this link.
Let me know if this works!
Have a beautiful day ahead! 🙂

The printer does not appear in the device manager, with other printers, under the heading "Print Queues"
The Software package HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477 Printer Series Full Software and Drivers. available at the following HP.com link
http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=7326585&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4192
does not finish successfully, but it says it does. After trying this install package, it identifies the printer, starts the installation and stops after about 18% completed. After which, looking in Devices and Printer, there is nothing installed - No HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477. Looking in Device Manger, there is no HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477. More importantly, there is no scanner software installed.
I can get the printer to work by using the Windows “Add Printer” command in Devices and Printers, but this does not add the scanner software which, If successful, would have been installed by the Full Software Package above.
A further Note: This works under Windows 7. I think you have to update your install package!!

Hey there! @DRK31, thanks for the response.
Thanks for trying out the steps.
As you mentioned that your printer is working now but the scanner still does not work.
Install HP scan and capture app and check if it works.
Please find the link to download and know how to HP scan and capture app.
I'll watch your reply!
Have a beautiful day ahead! 🙂

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I finally figured out that I had to manually install the printer, and to manually download and install the "new" HP Scan software, and quite frankly, it's a piece of junk. I can no longer scan to an email, customize a lot of the settings for scanning, etc.
For the record, I spent a pretty good chunk of money on something that has lost a LOT of functionality with the "new and improved" software. Installs don't work at all, and the software isn't nearly as good as the old stuff. All that HP had to do was to make sure the print drivers worked with Win10 and that would have been all that was required. Please keep me updated if you decide to actually fix the installation problems.

@JimStocks, thanks for the response.
Thanks for trying out the steps.
As you mentioned that you are still unable to install the full feature software, please try the steps mentioned below.

Under the Start screen type Programs and Features. Click on Programs and Features to launch it
In the Programs and Features window, a list of programs installed on your computer will populate. Please scroll down the list and look for your HP Laserjet. If you see your HP Laserjet listed please click on it and select Uninstall
Please follow any onscreen prompts to complete the uninstall. Once the uninstall is complete please close Programs and Features.
Next, click on your Start menu
Select Devices and Printers
In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Laserjet. If you see it listed please right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'.
Next, click on any device listed under 'Printers and Faxes' once just to highlight it
Click Print Server Properties at the top of the window
Click on the Drivers tab
Look for your HP Laserjet driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom
Click Remove Driver Only
Select OK
Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties window
Close Devices and Printers.
Open your Start screen by selecting the Windows icon on the bottom left of your computer screen, or by selecting the Windows key on the bottom left of your keyboard, to the right of the Ctrl button
Under the Start screen type Run. Click Run to launch the Run dialogue box
In the Run box type msconfig and click OK
When the System Configuration Window opens select 'Selective Startup' and uncheck Load Startup Items
Click the Services tab. Check the box at the bottom for Hide All Microsoft Services
Select Disable All
Select Apply and OK
Restart your computer when prompted
Please install the basic drivers from this link.
Reopen the System Configuration Window on your computers.
When the window opens select 'Normal Startup'

Restart your computer a final time when prompted.
When your computers come back ON all background programs will be running as per normal.

Let’s start again…
Step #1
I did a clear install of win10 pro 64bit. After which, I did not install ANY SOFTWARE.
Step #2
I downloaded Full Install - HP_Color_LJ_Pro_MFP_M477-PCL-6_Print_Driver_16124.exe from the HP.com web site.
Step #3
I ran MSCONFIG and Unchecked “Load Startup items” and selected Services and disable all non-Microsoft services.
Step #4
I run the above mentioned full install software. The software packages runs, asks for what items to load, I leave all selected. I click next then click on accept installation agreement, I click next and then next again. For connection type, I select Connect through a network and click on search by host name which I have configures on the printer as LaserJet477. I click next it finds my M477 printer. I click next and the installation begins. The progress percent counts up to 12% and then says the software has been successfully installed. Print a test page is checked, but when I click finish nothing happens. I go to Devices and Printers, the M477 printer is not there. I go to Device Manager, the M477 is not listed under Print Queues. I run Print Management, the M477 printer is not listed.
It is as if I never ran the install program. This is clearly unacceptable. This is a $500 printer that I can’t even install the software for. So far all of your suggestions have made no change in the result. HELP!!! After the install I can’t find the printer or scanner anywhere. I have also downloaded the HP Scan and Capture app, but it also does not work as it cannot find the Scanner.
If I run the install program again, It just says the prior install failed to complete and tries to do an uninstall followed by a reboot and the process starts again.
How about increasing the level of attention to this problem as it is MAJOR!!!!
