As of 11/20/20, the old firmware is still available here: https://driver-hp.net/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-driver/

I had to run the firmware install three times. The first two times I ran it wirelessly and it didn't seem to do anything. The third time I removed the wireless printer from my  PC and connected it with a USB cable. It STILL didn't seem to work, as after it restarted (all three times) the date code of the firmware was still the October one.

I threw up my hands in despair and went to refill my coffee. When I came back into my office a few minutes later the printer was updating and re-calibrating. Now it has the June 2020 firmware on it and works again. So I assume once you run the firmware update utility you need to turn off the printer and then turn it back on and WAIT PATIENTLY!

The third time I did actually turn it off using the power button, before unplugging it. Then I plugged it back in and then turned it back on using the power button.

I have set the printer not to take updates ever again and will not be foolish enough to trust HP with a software update EVER AGAIN.

Also, the next printer I buy will not be an HP. I'm not a fool and refuse to be played. Shame on you HP; and to think I used to work for you!

PJR2.  You sent a link to an .exe file.  I can't run that on my Mac.  Any suggestions?

afraid not, dont knwo anything about Macs - maybe just google search the firmware number for your Mac, likely 1 3rd party website may host it
