Since the tech support took over the control of my pc, I checked the web browser history of the sites he used.  Besides the official software and driver download site (which only offers the latest 20201021), he also used accessed a site called www.123rescue.com, but it requires a one time code to get in.

BTW, I've been using only genuine toners since the start so I think using the 3rd party toners may not be the main reason.  Maybe it has to do with the technical competency of the tech support.  My tech support was unsuccessful in uninstalling the firmware remotely, so he asked me to do a complete erase on my printer control panel, and took more than one hour doing that.

I don't think the old version is available to the public anymore, only they do.  So you may have to call the tech support again.  They probably know the new firmware can cause problems as they told me to disable automatic updating in the setup to prevent future problems

Thanks HP my printer has been unable to print for 3 days now. Solution chucked that POS and bought another printer and guess what? It wasnt an hp.

Firmware datecode 20200612 is still available. Contact your third party toner vendor and ask for a fix. There are currently two options:

* Wait for 3rd party vendor to update toner chip (mine is about 2 weeks out). You pull out old toner chip and replace with new one that communicates with latest firmware datecode 20201021; or

*  (Easiest). Get your third party toner vendor to link you to datecode 20200612 and downgrade your firmware. This one is easiest and quickest but depends on who you bought your toner from and how responsive are they. Mine responded in a day and I'm operational again.

HP won't be in business much longer. The third party toner vendors are too quick to implement a fix. And HP is too stupid to keep selling toner at 10 times the generic rate. When my supply of 3rd party toner is out, I also will be buying a non HP laserjet manufacturer who doesn't block you from third party toner or screw you by hiding the block in a firmware update.

Can you (or anyone) please send the old firmware version (20200612) my way?  My MFP M281fdw is pretty much bricked after the updated firmware (20201021).  I cannot even scan a document now!  My wife uses this printer/scanner to homeschool.  We really need to get it working again.    [Personal Information Removed]

I used the update firmware program that I found on the HP website, before they updated that.

I rolled back from 20201021 to 20200612 and my printer now works again.

The firmware program is 34meg so too large to email, but can be downloaded from this FTP link – available for 7 days before auto deleted.

My printer is connected wireless and to get the firmware program to work I had to delete the existing printer from my laptop, reinstall printer with a printer/USB cable and then could revert back to wireless printing.

Hope it helps and 2 fingers up to HP for their Cartel approach in a pandemic!!
