HP ENVY 4523 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP Envy 4523 will ONLY print in colour. I saw an online message on HP that uninstalling the printer and reinstalling the printer would fix the problem. It did, BUT only for one printout.

I have since tried to print other doc's and only comes out in black and white.

Can somebody help please?

Hi @Snowy1960,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Envy 4523 printer is having trouble maintaining color printing after the initial reinstallation. Here are some steps to help troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue.

Check Printer Settings: Make sure the printer settings are configured to print in color. Go to the print settings before printing a document and ensure that "Color" is selected instead of "Black & White" or "Grayscale."

  • Windows: Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click on your HP Envy 4523, and select Printing Preferences. Check the settings under the "Color" tab.
  • Mac: Open the document you want to print, go to File > Print, and check the print settings. Ensure "Color" is selected in the drop-down menu.

Update Printer Driver: Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed. Visit the HP Support website and download the most recent driver for the HP Envy 4523.

Check Ink Levels: Verify that the color ink cartridges are not empty. Even if the cartridges are new, it's worth checking the ink levels to ensure there is enough color ink.

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the ink levels menu.
  • Alternatively, you can check the ink levels using the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant software.

Run Printer Diagnostics: Use the printer's built-in diagnostic tools to check for any issues with the ink cartridges or printhead.

  • Go to Settings on the printer's control panel, find Tools, and look for options like Print Quality Diagnostics or Printhead Cleaning.

Perform a Hard Reset: Sometimes, a hard reset can resolve temporary issues with printers.

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure your printer's firmware is up-to-date. Check for updates on the HP Support website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden, I actually fixed the problem.

I watched an online video that suggested removing the printer from my computer.

Then adding the printer by selecting add manually. Then selecting add a printer using an IP or hostname.

I then selected TCP/IP device. Then entered the printers IP address.

This worked and NOW I can see the the choice of back and white OR colour in the paper quality settings that i could not see before.
