Just wanted to let you know that those instructions worked perfectly for my Deskjet 6540.
I have not been able to print since updating to Big Sur but I followed the instructions in detail and have a happy ending.
This is in response to post 31
thanks.

Updated to 11.1 and now the printer is broken again.
Now what it does is after I print one job, the printer goes offline. I have to physically remove the printer cable from my system and then plug it back in before it will print another job.

I'm glad it works for you. I've tried again with a fresh copy of HP Smart and the program finds my DeskJet 1055 printer, but says that it's not installed. I also continue to get a few messages about HP...framework may damage my computer. I've tried re-installing the current HP driver from Apple support, but that doesn't help.
Generally, people with a wireless-capable HP printer have been able to get it working fairly easily. The DeskJet 1055 is USB-only ... That may have something to do with my lack of success.
