Magenta cartridge leaking

All of a sudden, I noticed the red ink leaking. Taking out the cartridge it’s soaked around the entrance into the printer machinery. I replaced it with a new cartridge but the same thing happened.

Dismantling the printer seems risky. Any idea what to do?

Sometimes q repair service costs more than buying a new printer? Thankful for advice.

Hi @ingemarS,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 is having an issue with the magenta cartridge or printhead, and the leaking ink can sometimes indicate a problem with the cartridge seal or the printhead's ink delivery system. Here’s a safer approach you can try before considering dismantling or professional repair.

Turn Off and Unplug the Printer: This will avoid any electrical issues while you’re working with the printer.

Check the Cartridge Seal: Sometimes the cartridge's protective tape or seal can fail to come off properly, causing leakage. Double-check that the new cartridge doesn't have any remaining tape or protective covers that might be causing the ink to leak.

Clean the Cartridge and Printer Area:

  • Carefully clean around the magenta cartridge and the area where it enters the printer using a lint-free cloth. Be gentle so you don’t damage any internal components.
  • Wipe down the printhead area where the cartridge connects. Ink build-up there might be causing issues.

Inspect the Printhead: If you have a clean cloth, gently wipe the printhead and surrounding area to see if there's any blockage or excessive ink that might be affecting the flow of ink to the cartridge. If the printhead is clogged, it can lead to leaks, but be careful as printhead issues can be tricky to fix yourself.

Run a Cleaning Cycle: After cleaning, run a printer cleaning cycle through the printer’s settings. This will help ensure the ink is flowing properly and might prevent further leaks.

Check for Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridge you’re using is compatible with the printer model. Sometimes third-party cartridges, or even incorrect HP cartridges, can cause leakage or other malfunctions.

Factory Reset: If the issue persists, you can try a factory reset of the printer (if applicable), but this is usually a last resort for severe issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for all advice. I have done cleaning level 1 and 2 after another new cartridge was installed. somehow the leaking has not showed up yet. The "Plug and Pray" method?
