This screen may provide you with a lot of information. It makes me think there is a lot wrong with this printer:

In HP Smart, I select Tools (little wrench, lower left), it goes to this screen:

Redheadfsa_1-1727567436489.png

and after selecting Start, I get that first screen, which mentions 'what's in queue'. I also don' t have the ability to make this my default printer - it's chosen the fax as the default & won't let me change it. Do I just have a bad printer or what?

@Redheadfsa

For the moment, put HP Smart aside.

If it's OK, let's concentrate on the printer software you installed and the printer.

Perhaps back up and provide some information to help me understand what you have and how you are using the printer.

Thanks for taking time to answer the following questions.

What is your Operating System / version?

How is the printer connected?

For example -- please tell us...

Is the printer connected using a USB printer cable between the computer and the printer?

OR

Is the printer on the network?

and, if yes, the printer is on the network,

Is the printer connected to Ethernet, standard Wireless (with a router), or Wi-Fi Direct?

If the printer is connected to the network (Ethernet or Wireless),

Do you have a fixed (manual / static) IP address assigned to the printer?

If the printer is connected to Wireless, do you have the printer connected to 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

You indicated you managed to install the printer software --

Is the printer software listed in Programs and Features?

How long have you had the printer?

Have you used the printer with any other devices  (Different computer, tablet, phone) ?
