6520 Photosmart printer
macOS 10.12 Sierra

My HP 6520 Photosmart printer worked for years until I had to install a new modem / router. Now I need [apparently] to set a static IP address for the printer. I've looked at many suggested fixes but none get me anywhere. The printer is 10 years old or so. I am using a MacBook Pro laptop. Is there a set of step-by-step instructions, in simple English with no techno-babble [I am a technical midget] such that I can enter information or select something to get the printer back up? I have turned everything off and on and that sorted it for a while but now it's gone again. As an aside, are we anywhere near The Internet Of Everything where all devices will sort out how they communicate one to another?

@wilsonmcarthur, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • How far is the printer located from the WiFi router?
  • Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network.
  • The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold the option key on your keyboard and click the WiFi icon to get detailed information.

Reset the network settings and reconnect the printer to the wireless network

  1. On the printer screen, go to Setup > Wireless menu > Restore Network Defaults
  2. Wireless menu > Wireless setup wizard > Choose your Wireless network and input the password.
  3. Check if the Wireless blue light on the printer is steady.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your MAC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Now, add the printer on your MAC using Airprint driver.

Let me know how this goes.

Hello, Kumar.

Thank you for responding to my query.

I have discovered several suggestions but, alas, none works, although I have tried to copy the instructions diligently.  The printer does not recognise the WiFi.  The modem / router does not recognise the printer.  It all worked fine until I had to install a new modem / router.  Now, I have to close the laptop, printer and modem / router and restart them because of the apparently randomly-assigned IP address.  Good old technology.

I have a techy friend who will likely sort this out for a few beers.  Meanwhile, as I don't have lots of occasions in which I need the printer, I'll ignore the problem.

Thank you again.

@wilsonmcarthur

Keep us posted anytime you need further assistance. Meantime you can check those details with your new ISP

This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. Do not connect it to 5 GHz Network incase your Router supports both 2.4 and 5 GHz

- If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, then the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.

Please check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.

Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.

Thank you 😊
