HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer

I just unboxed my 8028e printer.  I can print form the document feeder but not scan.

figured out how to go under printer settings in computer to change from scanning on flatbed to scanning on feeder but have to do it every time.  and still won't work when hitting scan directly on printer.  Since the printer detects the pages in the feeder, shouldn't it automatically scan from there?

HP Smart

No, the printer won't know what to do just because it accepts the documents in the ADF and then perhaps even "dings" that it is ready to continue.  It's the "continue" part that depends on other settings, apps, and permissions.

From your description, it appears you are using HP Smart and have figured out how the app lets you select the Source and other settings.

HP Smart -- Windows or Mobile -- does not understand the idea of "setting custom defaults" -- Each time you want to print or scan, you have to open the app then tell it everything you want to do.

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Scan - PDF - Menu options - Save

The "exception" to "tell the printer everything", though it does not actually contradict the "tell the app what to do" setup:

HP Smart (Windows and Mobile) supports the concept of HP Smart Shortcuts.

Although a bit limited in scope, Shortcuts are clever little macros that can designate how to complete a job started in the application.

Scan Stuff

The following is primarily meant to address scanning from the printer to "where ever".

There are Scan apps and software that can be used on your computer, tablet, or phone to print and scan.

The printer has (essentially) two ways to Scan from the printer to a destination (computer).

True - Web Scan is not started on the printer -- Web Scan is configured, started, and run in your Browser.

Web Scan -- No extra software needed --  Caveat:  Web Scan must be enabled in the printer Security settings before it can be used.  If Web Scan can find your printer on the network where you are running Web Scan (in your browser), the app can scan and then let you save the scanned content to your system.

Scan to Computer --

To scan from the printer to your computer, it is required that you (first) install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

After the software is installed and the computer has been Restarted,

Open the Printer Assistant (if your full driver still supports it) >

Manage Scan to Computer > Enable the Scan to Computer feature.
