HP Recommended

My HP 1012 printer keeps printing test pages for no apparent reason.  It even does it when my 2012 iMac is in SLEEP mode at night.  Last night I forgot to turn off the printer and this morning there were 17 test pages that had printed overnight.  This has been  problem for a couple of years or so.  

 

Every once in a while, my iMac displays a message asking if I want to update either the software or the drivers or something (can't remember the specifics right now).  Several times I have clicked YES, but after a bit there is always an error message and the update never actually happens.

 

Does anyone know if there is something I can do other than getting rid of this very old printer and buying a new one?
