My HP 7740 pro is continually showing " verifying". I've tried turning the power off and back on.  I've had it for 5 years but it  has had very little use.  I usually do updates as they arise but as the display is not working correctly I cannot see if any are outstanding.

Hi @Lindsey70,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is stuck on "Verifying" and you've already tried power cycling the printer, here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

Turn Off the Printer:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds to ensure the printer completely powers down.

Reconnect and Power On:

  • Plug the power cord back into the printer and reconnect it to a power source.
  • Turn the printer back on and see if the issue is resolved.

2. Check for Paper Jams and Obstructions

Inspect the Printer:

  • Open all accessible doors and trays to check for any paper jams or obstructions that might be causing the issue.
  • Remove any paper or foreign objects you find.

Close Doors and Trays:

  • Make sure all doors and trays are properly closed and latched.

3. Update or Reinstall Printer Firmware

Firmware Check:

  • Since you mentioned you usually perform updates, it's crucial to ensure that the firmware is up-to-date. However, if the display is not functioning properly, this might be challenging.

Access Firmware Update (if possible):

  • If you can access the printer settings through the HP Smart app or the HP website, check if there’s a firmware update available and apply it.

Reinstall Firmware:

  • If possible, download the latest firmware from the HP Support website and follow the instructions to reinstall it.

4. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

Access Printer Menu:

  • If you can navigate through the printer’s menu, look for the option to perform a factory reset. This might be found under Settings > Printer Maintenance or a similar menu.

Reset Printer:

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer to factory defaults.

5. Check Connectivity

Network Check:

  • Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your network. If it's connected via Wi-Fi, try reconnecting it to your network.

Try Different Connections:

  • If you’re using a wired connection, try using a different USB port or cable to see if it resolves the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
