Hi @tjjohnstn,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is when your HP OfficeJet 8710 refuses to print PDFs, especially when other file types work fine. This is related to driver settings, PDF rendering, or print spooler conflicts. Let’s fix this step by step:

Recommended Fixes

1. Update Printer Driver

2. Use HP App or Print as Image

  • Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Click Print → Advanced → Print as Image.
  • This bypasses complex PDF rendering that can choke the printer.

3. Clear Print Spooler

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc.
  • Find Print Spooler, right-click → Stop.
  • Go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files.
  • Restart the Print Spooler service.

4. Update Firmware

  • From the printer control panel:
    • Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update Printer.
  • Or download firmware from HP’s site.

5. Try HP App

6. If Still Failing

  • Convert PDF to JPEG or Word and print.
  • Or use Microsoft Print to PDF → Save → Print again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
