HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g

My OfficeJet 8600 Bonjour Multifunction prints & scans fine on my mac Book Pro (Sequoia 15.4.1) but my Mac Mini does not see the printer as "multifunction" and just says "bonjour" when I add it. It will print but it won't scan. I have downloaded and installed the drivers multiple times and it says driver 4 in the printer settings.  I have removed and added, restarted, all of it. I have connected the 8600 to the mac mini via usb - no change. I have called mac support, escalated, they can't figure it out. Also, since it does not see the 8600 as "multifunction" the Image Capture app is grey, it never shows up as it thinks there is no scanner.  How do I get my mac mini to see the 8600 as the "bonjour Multifunction" it is?

@LC150, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The fact that your MacBook Pro (same macOS Sequoia 15.4.1) sees it correctly and the Mac Mini doesn't means it's not the printer or network, it's something specific to the Mac Mini's printer system.

Here’s a deep fix approach (because you’ve already done the basics):

Reset the Mac Mini's Printing System

(This completely wipes all saved printers, queues, and driver caches — a full reset.)

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the list of printers.
  • Select Reset Printing System.
  • Confirm.
→ This deletes all printers, queues, old driver junk, stuck preferences, and resets the CUPS system.

Manually Clear CUPS Cache (optional but helpful)

Even after reset, some CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) files linger:

  • Open Terminal and run:
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/*
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Printers/hp
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Preferences/org.cups.printers.plist

  • Then reboot the Mac Mini.

(Don't worry — when you add a new printer, macOS rebuilds all this automatically.)

Add the Printer via Bonjour Multifunction Explicitly

Now add the printer:

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click Add Printer (+).
  • Wait a minute for it to fully populate.
  • Make sure you choose the listing that says "Bonjour Multifunction," not just "Bonjour"!
    • If it only shows "Bonjour," click the "IP" tab instead and add it manually via HP JetDirect - Socket:
      • IP address: (get it from printer's display panel or settings).
      • Protocol: HP JetDirect - Socket.
      • Name: HP Officejet Pro 8600.
      • Use: Select Software... → Pick the HP Officejet Pro 8600 driver.
  • (You can also try IPP protocol if JetDirect doesn't show scanning.)

If "Bonjour Multifunction" shows, select it.
If not, adding via IP can force macOS to "see" it properly as multifunction.

If Still No Multifunction Detected

Sometimes HP's scanner plugins don't register properly. You can force macOS to refresh its scanner services:

  • Open Terminal and run:
    sudo launchctl kickstart -k system/com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2
    sudo launchctl kickstart -k system/com.apple.scantwo

Then reopen Image Capture.
Your 8600 should show up under Shared Devices if the scanner side is properly recognized.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello and thank you for all these suggestions! I went down the list provided, and still no luck in "seeing" the Bonjour "Multifunction"

for this command --> sudo rm -rf /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/*  .... it told me

zsh: no matches found:

The rest of the commands in the first list had no reply when I put them into Terminal

I rebooted.

I tried to add the printer using the IP address/protocol Jet direct socket - and under "select software" HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 is not on the list (same for IPP protocol, tried that also).

[I don't know why the driver is not on the list, I downloaded it several times and I have the "HP Smart" app and the Mac Mini will scan from the app]

I went back to Terminal and I got the following messages for each of the lines:

Could not find service "com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2" in domain for system

Could not find service "com.apple.scantwo" in domain for system

I can go to Applications, and see the Image Capture icon, and when I click it it comes up but there is nothing in the box and the box is grey.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Okay, Just to close this out, I got it to work.

Having asked for an escalation of my issue, I received a call back from Apple and they told me to go here:

https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06164609

download the Easy Admin function, select the printer model (OfficeJet Pro 8600), restart mac mini, remove the old/bad printer (the plain "bonjour"), add the printer back

Ta-Da! it now saw it as Bonjour Multifunction.

I had to turn off the printer and turn it back on, and then it scanned correctly from the flatbed and the doc feed.
