HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Two years ago, my wireless printer would print from my phone, my wife's phone, all of my kids' computers, our computers, etc.  Now, I can't even get it to print off my computer and it's always showing up as Offline.  I last used it to print off my computer about a month ago, but now I can't get it to print.  I'm tired of restarting my computer which is an HP.  You'd think two products from the same company would work, but I'm pretty much ready to cut bait and trash all my HP products because I have another printer that can only print if it is connected to the internet (I just needed it to print directly from a laptop that I have).  Seems like I've wasted too much money with HP.  Can anyone help?

Hi @Idontknow10,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We’re sorry for the trouble with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw showing offline and not printing. This is often due to network or driver issues after updates. Let’s walk you through quick steps to restore the connection and ensure smooth, reliable printing going forward.

1: Check Printer Connection Status

Let’s confirm if your printer is still connected to your wireless network:

  1. On the printer’s touchscreen:
    • Tap the Wireless icon or go to Network Settings.
    • Check if it’s connected to your Wi-Fi and shows an IP address (e.g., 192.168.x.x).
  2. If not connected:
    • Reconnect it using the Wireless Setup Wizard from the printer’s touchscreen.

If already connected and showing an IP, note the IP address for later use.

2: Set a Static IP (Prevents Offline Issues)

  1. Open a browser on your computer.
  2. Type the printer’s IP address in the address bar (e.g., http://192.168.1.105) and press Enter.
  3. This will open the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  4. Navigate to Network > IPv4 Configuration and set:
    • Manual IP: Use the current IP address.
    • Manual Subnet and Gateway: These are typically auto-filled.
  5. Apply and save changes.

3: Re-add Printer Using the Correct IP Port

  1. On your PC, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Remove all entries of your HP M283cdw if they show “Offline”.
  3. Click Add a Printer > Choose the printer I want that isn’t listed.
  4. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
  5. Enter the IP address from Step 1 and follow the prompts.

This ensures Windows talks to the correct IP, avoiding offline or mismatched port issues.

4: Reinstall the Latest HP Smart App or Full Software Suite

  1. Uninstall any existing HP software or drivers for the printer.
  2. Download and install the latest driver for your model from:
🔗 HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
  3. Alternatively, use the HP Smart App from the Microsoft Store: HP Smart - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store
  • Add your printer using the IP address.
  • Run the “Printer Status Report” or print a test page to confirm.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
