Hello:
My new computer cannot detect my HP printer. I have tried everything. It goes round and round but just cannot get to it. I installed HP Smart from Microsoft Store and it did not do anything. HP Support App says to use 123hp but 123hp does not even list my printer. It then goes in a roundabout manner, and I get back to square one. Microsoft 10 S says I can find the device without any additional software.
Any idea what is up?
Thanks

Welcome to the HP User Community.
HP Smart is likely not supported - printer was released (available for sale) about 2009.
What to do?
Try / Consider
Install and Print using the Built-in Windows Print Drivers
Reference
HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver
Scan? See Section FAQ > How do I use the printer functions with the built-in driver?
Example
Scan documents and photos: Complete scan jobs with a Windows app that works with the built-in driver.
- Windows Fax and Scan: In Windows, search for and open Windows Fax and Scan. Click New Scan, and then select your printer.
- Windows Paint: In Windows, search for and open Paint. Click FileFrom scanner or camera.
- Windows Scan app: In Windows, search for and open the Windows Scan app. If it is not listed, go to Windows Scan (in English) to install it.

Hi Dragon
I tried that. Install the Printer Driver saw many HP printers but not the one I want. I am stuck. Does it not recognize the printer I want? Is there an alternate driver I could use? Is HP Envy compatible?
Thanks

No sure about anything else..
If you wish to do so, try again -
If you did not do so the first time,
During the procedure, use the Windows Update button to update the printer list.
The "update" can take a while - several long minutes, in fact.
When the update is complete,
Select HP as the printer maker (left column)
Scroll down and select "HP Photosmart D5400 series)"
Example Add-a-Printer - Search for HP > Photosmart D5400
Add-a-Printer_PhotoSmart_D5400_1
General Example - Add a Printer - The printer I want isn't listed
Reminders:
- If using a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, disconnect the cable before you start the procedure. Connect the cable only when instructed or after the drivers are installed (at the “Finish”).
- If a “USB port” option is not listed as available, select the LPT port. Connect the cable after the procedure is completed, (and if necessary) Restart the computer and log in
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Add a Printer
Click The printer that I want isn’t listed
Click Add a Local or Network Printer with manual settings
Click Next
Choose Printer Port
Select Use an existing port
Select first LPT port in list - or for USB - select (if available in list) USB port
Install the Printer
Left column: HP
Right column: Scroll, search, select (click) printer
If Printer is not found in list:
Click Windows Updates
Wait several minutes for list to update
Left column: HP
Right column: Scroll, search, select (click) printer
(Repeat if Necessary) Choose Printer Port
Select Use an existing port
Select first LPT port in list or for USB select (if available in list) USB port
Click Yes to “…allow this app to make changes to your device” (UAC)
Optional: Type a printer Name or use the default
Next > Wait for printer software to install …
Next >
Click Share this printer so that others on your network can find and use it
Optional: Fill in information for printer location and a comment
Optional: Click Set as the default printer
Optional: Click to Print a test page > Finish
